Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Dash put the tying run on first base and the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning but fell short of a comeback in a 7-5 loss to Down East in front of 5,604 fans at BB&T Ballpark on Saturday night.
Trailing by two runs entering the final frame, Alex Call led off the inning with a single against Down East (20-16) southpaw C.D. Pelham. Then, after back-to-back fielder's choice groundouts, Yermin Mercedes walked to bring Zach Remillard to the plate as the potential winning run. But, Remillard struck out and Winston-Salem (20-16) suffered its third straight loss, marking the first time the Dash have dropped three straight since April 15-17.
As was the case in the first two games in the series, Winston-Salem fell behind early. Luis Martinez (2-2) walked Eric Jenkins to start the game and then allowed a single to Leody Taveras. Jenkins and Taveras stole second and third, and Jenkins scored on an RBI groundout from Brendon Davis to give Down East an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Later in the frame, Taveras scored on a fielding error by Remillard on a groundball from Alex Kowalczyk to make it a 2-0 contest.
Down East added three more runs in the second. With runners on first and second, Jenkins hit a ground-rule double to right field to bring in Josh Altmann. Two batters later, Blaine Prescott scored on an RBI groundout from Taveras, and then Jenkins scored on a single from Davis to make it 5-0 Wood Ducks after two innings.
Martinez tossed a scoreless third inning, but that was his final frame of the night. The right-hander allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits, walking four and striking out three.
Winston-Salem plated its lone run against Wood Ducks starter Christian Torres (3-2) in the third. After Luis Basabe doubled with two outs, Micker Adolfo slashed an RBI single through the right side to cut the deficit to four. Torres allowed just one other hit through the rest of his start, striking out seven and walking one in his five innings.
Down East tacked on two runs in the sixth. With runners on second and third and two outs, Andretty Cordero lined a single into centerfield to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Dash bats woke up in the bottom of the inning. Mercedes led off with a double and moved to third on a passed ball, scoring easily on a single from Remillard. Then, two batters after Yeyson Yrizarri reached on a fielder's choice, Ti'Quan Forbes shot a single into right field to put runners on the corners. Following a walk to Joel Booker that loaded the bases, Call sliced the Wood Ducks lead to three with a two-run single. Call finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and now has hits in nine of his last ten games.
Forbes added a run in the eighth on a solo home run. Facing Locke St. John with two outs, Forbes crushed a 419-foot homer into the Foothills Brewpen in left-center for his first home run of the season to make it a 7-5 game. However, Winston-Salem stranded 10 runners on base, including the tying runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Winston-Salem's series with the Wood Ducks wraps up on Sunday at BB&T Ballpark. Left-hander Bernardo Flores (2-2, 3.25 ERA) starts for the Dash against Wood Ducks right-hander Emerson Martinez (2-3, 4.22 ERA). First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m., with coverage beginning at 1:45 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App. Fans can also watch locally on My48 (WXLV).
The Dash's homestand finishes with a Mother's Day celebration on Sunday. Also, the series finale will be a Lowes Foods Family Sunday, where children ages 12 and under will receive a free bag of popcorn. Also, two Dash players will sign autographs on the concourse prior to the game. Following the final out on Sunday, kids can run the bases, powered by New Balance Winston-Salem.
