DASH WASTE FIVE-RUN LEAD SATURDAY Winston-Salem enjoyed a 6-1 cushion through four innings and a 9-7 lead after seven, but the Carolina Mudcats rallied for an 11-9 triumph in Saturday's opener of this three-game series at BB&T Ballpark. The Mudcats plated six runs in the fifth inning before the Dash bounced back with two in the bottom of that frame and another tally in the sixth. However, Carolina's three-run eighth proved to be the difference in the Dash's first home loss when scoring six-plus runs. All nine Winston starters recorded at least one hit.
GREAT DAY FOR MAY Outfielder Jacob May matched a career high with four hits, three singles and a third-inning triple. May's only other four-hit effort took place June 26, 2013, while he played for rookie-level Great Falls. The White Sox third-round pick a year ago, May boasts a .376 batting average this month, which is second to Lynchburg's Kevin Ahrens (.378) in the CL. In High-A baseball, May's mark this month is eighth-best after hitting .204 in April and May combined.
INCREASED THIEVERY Not only has May thrived at the plate to the tune of an eight-game hitting streak (16-for-33 [.485], 12 runs), but he has swiped 10 bases during this spurt and eight over the last four games. May's increased production has spilled over to his work on the bases. After just eight stolen bases in 50 games through May, the Ohio native has swiped 19 bags in his 23 starts this month. Thus, he leads all active Carolina League hitters with 27 stolen bases. Only Jose Peraza (35) and Kyle Wren (33), two former Lynchburg speedsters who have graduated to Double-A, have more.
ANOTHER EIGHT Both May and Joey DeMichele have hit safely in eight consecutive contests. During DeMichele's season-long run, he is hitting .344 (11-for-32) with five RBIs and three runs scored. DeMichele and May combined to go 7-for-9 with five runs and a pair of RBIs in Saturday's two-run defeat.
HIGH QUALITY BUCCIFERRO Dash starter Tony Bucciferro leads the Carolina League and is third in High-A with 92.1 innings pitched in his 15 starts on the season. Bucciferro trails former Winston-Salem southpaw Spencer Arroyo, now with Visalia (Arizona), by eight innings of work for the High-A lead. Bucciferro averages more than six innings per outing, and he has worked into the seventh on six occasions. The former Michigan State star has not given up more than three earned runs since May 6 (10 starts ago). His 3.41 ERA is 10th-best on the circuit, while his 1.15 WHIP places seventh.
ONE OF THE BEST DUOS Winston-Salem outfielders Courtney Hawkins (58) and Jason Coats (51) are first and tied for second, respectively, in RBIs in the CL. Hawkins is tied for fifth in all of High-A baseball, while Coats is three RBIs shy of the top 10. Their combined RBI total of 109 is sixth-highest for a pair of teammates in High-A baseball. In terms of home runs, Hawkins is alone in second in the league with 13, while Coats owns a share of second place thanks to his 12 long balls.
CONTINUING TO CLIMB BB&T Ballpark has not been kind to Cleveland's Carolina League club since its opening in 2010. The Dash are 35-11 (.761) versus either defunct Kinston (2010-11) or Carolina (2012-present) inside BB&T Ballpark. However, the Mudcats can claim just the second series win for an Indians affiliate in the Triad in the last 20 such trips with a win Sunday or Monday.
DASH DOTS Since June 13, Keon Barnum is hitting .385 (20-for-52) with two homers, six RBIs and 10 runs scored...As a result, his average has jumped 34 points to a season-high .237 during this span... Braulio Ortiz suffered his league-leading eighth loss on Saturday...After recording a 3.68 ERA through the end of May, the Dash's bullpen owns a 6.39 ERA (53 ER in 74.2 IP) in June, which has pushed its 2014 mark to 4.51 (0.83 jump).
