Big Second Inning Leads to Dash Demise

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 29, 2014) - For the second straight game, Winston-Salem jumped out to an early lead but ultimately fell to the Carolina Mudcats 5-4 at BB&T Ballpark on Sunday evening.

Carolina (6-5, 35-43) sent nine men to the plate in the top of the second against Dash starter Tony Bucciferro (6-6). Yandy Diaz led off the frame with a single before Jeremy Lucas lasered his seventh home run of the season over the left field wall, giving the Mudcats a 2-1 lead.

The visitors from Zebulon continued the big inning with back-to-back hits from Jerrud Sabourin and James Roberts. Ryan Battaglia walked to load the bases. With two outs, Yhoxian Medina dribbled a grounder to second baseman Joey DeMichele, beating out an infield single. DeMichele's throwing error allowed a second run to score on the play, pushing the Carolina advantage to 4-1.

The Dash (6-5, 36-44) dented the scoreboard first during the opening inning against Mudcats' starter Cole Sulser (3-7). Jacob May extended his hitting streak to nine games with a leadoff double and DeMichele followed with a single to center field, scoring May for a 1-0 Winston-Salem edge. It was DeMichele's ninth consecutive contest with a hit.

Winston-Salem tightened things in the bottom of the third. Trailing 4-1, Keenyn Walker led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. He trotted home on May's second double of the game. May swiped his 28th bag of the year, the third-most in the Carolina League, by taking third and scored on Courtney Hawkins' sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Carolina padded its lead during a controversial top of the sixth. With two outs and no one on base, Sabourin smacked a line drive off the right field wall. Walker played the carom and fired the ball to second base, which arrived as Sabourin reached the area. Shortstop Zach Voight applied the tag, but the runner was ruled safe. One pitch later, James Roberts laced a single to center field, chasing Sabourin home for a 5-3 Mudcats margin.

The Dash drew closer in the seventh inning against Carolina reliever Benny Suarez. Voight led off the frame with a walk and advanced to third on Walker's double to left field. May's RBI groundout to second base scored Voight to make it a 5-4 game.

Winston-Salem was unable to complete the comeback attempt, though, as Carolina reliever Elvis Araujo pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save of the season and third against the Dash.

The Dash will try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Mudcats Monday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem will call upon right-hander Terance Marin (1-0, 4.09 ERA) while Carolina will send righty Adam Plutko (1-2, 3.94 ERA) to the mound.
