Carolina Mudcats News Release
Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats earned their second series win against the Winston-Salem Dash at BB&T Ballpark thanks to a 5-4 triumph on Sunday evening. The Mudcats (6-5, 35-43) pull into a second place tie with the Dash (6-5, 36-44) in the second half Southern Division race.
The series win for the Mudcats is just the second for the Cleveland Indians' Advanced-A affiliate since BB&T Ballpark opened in 2010.
Cole Sulser (3-7) held the Dash to three runs on three hits across six innings for his sixth quality start. He walked three and struck out six. Elvis Araujo worked around a one-out walk to record his seventh save and second in as many appearances.
Tony Bucciferro (6-6) shouldered a tough loss for Winston-Salem after hurling seven innings. The right-hander allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits. He walked one and struck out five. The four earned runs were the most Bucciferro allowed since May 6.
The Dash scored the first run on a single by Joey DeMichele, but the Mudcats retaliated with a four-run second. Yandy Diaz singled and trotted home on Jeremy Lucas' seventh home run of the season. The shot left the ballpark out to left.
Carolina pounced on the reeling Bucciferro by loading the bases on consecutive his and walk. Yhoxian Medina scored Jerrud Sabourin with a hit and a throwing error by DeMichele at second base allowed James Roberts across for a 4-1 advantage.
Keenyn Walker helped his team climb back in it by a drawing a walk to begin the third. Jacob May scored him with a double inside third and positioned himself at third with a stolen base. Courtney Hawkins drove a sac-fly to deep center and cut the margin to one.
The Mudcats scored a pivotal run off Bucciferro in the sixth. Sabourin laced a liner into right and beat the throw to second for a two-out double. After the Dash disputed the play at second, Roberts snuck a single into center to bring in Sabourin for a 5-3 lead.
May cut the lead to one against reliever Benny Suarez in the seventh by scoring Zach Voight on a grounder to second. But the Dash could get no closer against relievers Josh Martin and Araujo.
Carolina hopes for their first series sweep of the Dash in Winston-Salem on Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. The Mudcats return home to host the Lynchburg Hillcats on Tuesday, July 1.
