DASH, MUDCATS POSTPONED SATURDAY
Due to significant rain in the area, Saturday's scheduled game between the Dash and the Mudcats was postponed. As a result, these two teams will conclude their rain-altered series with a doubleheader on Sunday. Last year, the Dash went 8-12 in twin bill contests, including a 6-9 mark on the road in these types of games.
ADOLFO, FLORES LEAD DASH TO 6-3 WIN
Behind a three-hit performance from Micker Adolfo and a quality start from Bernardo Flores, the Dash defeated the Carolina Mudcats 6-3 at Five County Stadium on Friday to seal their first victory of the 2018 campaign. Trailing 3-0 heading into the seventh, the Dash broke through with a six-run frame. Adolfo provided the go-ahead hit in the form of a two-run single, and Yeyson Yrizarri capped the inning with the Dash's first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. On the mound, Flores tossed six innings while allowing three runs (two earned), and Mike Morrison, Matt Foster and Jose Ruiz combined to throw three shutout innings of relief to seal the win.
OUT OF THE GATES SWINGING
Winston-Salem's 23 combined hits this year marks the most for the franchise in the first two games of a season in the Dash era (2009-present). Here are the top performers thus far:
OF Micker Adolfo: 4-for-9, 2B, run scored, 3RBIs
OF Blake Rutherford: 3-for-9, run scored, RBI
INF Gavin Sheets: 3-for-9, three runs, RBI
INF Yeyson Yrizarri: 3-for-9, HR, 4RBIs
1ST FOR OMAR/1ST SINCE 2016
On top of it being the first Dash win of the new season, Friday's victory over the Muddies was historic for other reasons. It marked the first win of the managerial career of Omar Vizquel, a former three-time MLB All-Star. Before becoming the Dash's skipper, Vizquel spent four years as a first base coach for the Detroit Tigers. Friday's outcome also snapped an 18-game losing streak for the Dash against Carolina at Five County Stadium. Entering this series, Winston-Salem's last win in Zebulon came on August 3, 2016.
LOOKING TO CEASE THE MOMENT
Highly-touted right-hander Dylan Cease, who is rated the fifth-best prospect in the White Sox system, will make his High-A debut in game one of Winston-Salem's doubleheader. Originally a sixth-round pick with the Cubs in 2014, Cease was traded to the White Sox last July, along with three now-former Dash players (Eloy Jimenez, Bryant Flete and Matt Rose), in exchange for big league left-hander Jose Quintana. The righty was a non-roster invite to 2018 White Sox Spring Training. Between Low-A South Bend and Kannapolis last year, the Georgia native posted a 3.28 ERA in 22 starts with 126 strikeouts in 93.1 IP. More information is available on page 3.
WELCOME BACK, DANNY
Right-hander Danny Dopico, who pitched for Winston-Salem two years ago, will get the spot start in game two on Sunday. Despite entering the 2016 season as an organizational top-30 prospect per MLB Pipeline, Dopico went 0-3 in Winston-Salem with a 7.80 ERA, the highest mark among Dash pitchers that season. However, the former FIU closer responded with a solid 2017 campaign with Kannapolis (3.25 ERA in 39 games). More information is available on page 4.
SEVEN OF THE SOX TOP PROSPECTS
Of the top 15 prospects in the White Sox system, according to MLB Pipeline, seven of them have been placed on Winston-Salem's Opening Day roster. Outfielder Luis Robert will begin the season on the disabled list, but he highlights this septet as the third-best prospect. Cease (fifth), right-hander Dane Dunning (sixth), Rutherford (seventh), Adolfo (11th), Sheets (12th) and outfielder Luis Basabe (14th) round out this group.
DASH DOTS
Following Sunday's doubleheader, the Dash will travel to the Grand Strand for the first time...Winston has not won an opening series since 2011 when the Dash took two of three at Kinston.
