Birds Split Twin Bill Behind Miller's Impressive Debut

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Following a 6-4 loss to Frederick in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans shut out the Keys in a 3-0 twin bill finale win.

Tyson Miller (1-0) was brilliant in his first start with the Pelicans (1-3). Over five innings, he struck out seven while only walking one and allowing three hits. Jhon Romero followed his performance up with two strong innings of his own to earn his first save on the season.

Jhonny Pereda blasted a two-run shot in the second inning, and Vimael Machin knocked in Andrew Monasterio in the third frame with an RBI ground out to give the Pelicans the 3-0 advantage.

Lucas Humpal (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Keys (3-1), giving up all three runs over his five innings of work.

In game one, the Birds struck first on a Tyler Alamo sacrifice fly in the first. However, the Keys tallied three in the second and three more in the third to build a 6-1 lead.

Alamo blasted a solo shot for his first home run of the season in the third inning and the Pelicans scored twice more in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk from Connor Myers and a sacrifice fly by P.J. Higgins . However, they could not pull any closer.

Steven Klimek (1-0) earned the win with one scoreless inning of relief in the fifth while Bryan Hudson (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, in five innings. James Teagueearned the six-out save, his first of the season, in the back-end of the bullpen for the Keys.

Wyatt Short threw well for the Pelicans, tossing two shutout innings while striking out two.

On Monday, the Pelicans will take on the Winston-Salem Dash to open up a three-game series at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. RHP Alex Lange is slated to start for Myrtle Beach at 7:05 p.m. while Winston-Salem will counter with RHP Ricardo Pinto.
