BIRDS AND KEYS TO PLAY TWO SUNDAY

After inclement weather forced the postponement of Saturday's contest, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Frederick Keys will play a doubleheader beginning at 3:35 p.m. on Sunday. The second game of the twin bill will start no earlier than 6:05 p.m., and both contests will be seven innings in length. Frederick played the most doubleheaders in the league a season ago, posting a 16-12 (.571) record. The Pelicans went 11-9 (.550) in twin bills. The 10 doubleheaders Myrtle Beach engaged in last year are just behind the 2015 team's 11 for the most in recorded club history (since the 2005 season).

'PEN PALS

While Myrtle Beach is off to an 0-2 start, the Birds have been boasting a strong bullpen to this point. In Thursday's regular season opener, Casey Bloomquist and Chad Hockin combined to each throw two scoreless innings. In Friday's 10-0 loss, Tyler Peyton, Ryan Kellogg and Jordan Minch soaked up 5.1 innings, yielding just two runs. Thus, over the campaign's first two games, Pelicans relievers have combined for a 1.93 ERA.

WEEKEND VIBES

Myrtle Beach heads into Sunday as one of two winless teams in the Carolina League. The Pelicans' 10-0 defeat Friday was the club's worst loss in any season's first two games since at least the 2005 campaign. Meanwhile, one more falter to Frederick will clinch the Birds' first losing season-opening series since getting swept by Salem in 2014. That set marks Myrtle Beach's only lid-lifting series defeat since at least the 2005 season.

HELLO, IT'S ME

Nine of the 26 members of the Pelicans' 2018 Opening Day roster spent time with the club at some point during the 2017 season. The majority of these players are position players, featuring catchers P.J. Higgins and Tyler Pearson, infielders Tyler Alamo, Vimael Machin and Andruw Monasterio and outfielder Connor Myers. On the mound, the Birds will welcome back Casey Bloomquist, Ryan Kellogg and Jordan Minch. None of those three, each of whom will be a reliever, appeared in more than 30 games a year ago.

A TRADITION UNLIKE ANY OTHER

Thanks to their first half Southern Division title and a 73-67 overall record in 2017, Myrtle Beach continued a pair of impressive runs. The Pelicans' run of seven straight postseason appearances matches the 2001-07 Kinston Indians for the longest such streak in Carolina League history. In addition, no Carolina League team can match the Birds' seven consecutive winning seasons, with Lynchburg's three in a row representing the next-closest squad. Myrtle Beach has also reeled off a circuit-high five straight seasons with at least one divisional title, and the club has won seven of the last 14 halves in the Southern Division.

NOT-SO-SECRET WEAPONS

Twenty percent of the Cubs' Top 30 prospects will begin the season on Myrtle Beach's Opening Day roster. Three ranked prospects make up the club's rotation. Right-handed pitcher Alex Lange (No. 5 by both Baseball America and MLB.com) started the Battle of the Beaches exhibition game in Charleston. The Birds' Opening Day starter was right-hander Keegan Thompson (No. 14 by BA, No. 18 by MLB.com), and southpaw Bryan Hudson (No. 13 by by BA, No. 25 by MLB.com) is slated to start Sunday. Meanwhile, the No. 1

prospect in the organization according to BA is shortstop Aramis Ademan (No. 2 by MLB.com). Wladimir Galindo (No. 26 by MLB.com) will join Ademan in the infield, with D.J. Wilson (No. 9 by MLB.com, No. 11 by BA) figuring into the outfield mix. Wilson was named fastest baserunner, best athlete and best defensive outfielder, respectively, in the Cubs' system by Baseball America.

WE'RE BRINGING BUDDY BACK

For the third season in a row, manager Buddy Bailey will pilot Myrtle Beach. The 2018 campaign is Bailey's 30th season as a minor league manager, including his 13th with the Cubs' organization. A native of Madison Heights, Va., Bailey is the 11th manager in Minor League Baseball history to accumulate at least 2,000 career victories. His 2,006-1,846 (.521) record means he is just four triumphs away from breaking into the top 10 in MiLB history. Stan Wasiak, who managed in the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers' organization, along with the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox's systems, respectively, is the minors' all-time wins leader at 2,530-2,314 (.522).
