Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Four in a Row: Winston-Salem won its fourth straight game on Saturday night with a 7-3 victory over the Kinston Indians. The Dash hasn't lost since falling in in the 12th inning on Tuesday night against Potomac and stands a game back of league-leading Salem for the best record in the Southern Division and the entire Carolina League.

Lumber Liquidator: Dash starter Nevin Griffith turned in the most impressive performance by a Winston pitcher this season on Saturday night, allowing just one run over seven sharp innings. He picked up his second win over the K-Tribe this season and lowered his season ERA to 1.38.

Ash Attackers & Maple Mavens: Winston-Salem remains atop the Carolina League in batting average with a .290 team clip. The Dash's average is 23 points higher than Frederick, which holds the next best mark. Winston has four players in the top ten in the league in batting average: Drew Garcia (5th, .353), Jon Gilmore (6th, .351), Brandon Short (8th, .341), and Justin Greene (9th, .333).

Garcia Gone: In the sixth inning, Drew Garcia swatted his first home run of the season, a towering two-run shot to right that gave the Dash a 6-1 lead. The second baseman now has 11 RBI on the year, one behind the Carolina League leaders. Earlier in last night's ballgame, Garcia stroked a double to left, extending his team-best hitting streak to seven games. Over the streak, he is hitting an impressive .419.

Today's Opposing Starter: RHP Joey Mahalic (1-0, 1.80) makes his second start of the season and his first against Winston-Salem. His 2009 season was cut short by an elbow injury in the fourth inning of his only start for Kinston. He began 2009 with Lake County, going 0-1 with a 1.91 ERA in six starts. Mahalic was Cleveland's 32nd round draft pick in 2007 out of Wilson HS in Portland, Oregon. In his senior season, he was selected as Oregon's 6A Player of the Year. He helped lead Wilson to a state title in 2006 and had originally committed to playing his college ball at Oregon State University before signing with the Indians. Mahalic was a two-way player in high school and considered himself to be a better hitter than a pitcher. He also was the starting quarterback on the football team. He throws a sinking fastball that sits at 90-91 mph and can touch 94. His slider is his best pitch and he also throws a changeup. His father, Drew, played linebacker at Notre Dame and in the NFL for San Diego and Philadelphia from 1975-78. Drew Mahalic was part of the Fighting Irish's 1972 National Championship team and wore jersey # 45 the year before Rudy Ruettiger wore it in 1975 when Mahalic went to the NFL.
