Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Lynchburg, VA - The Winston-Salem Dash used a season-high 14 hits and a strong start from Johnnie Lowe to defeat the Lynchburg Hillcats 9-1 on Monday night at City Stadium. Lowe (1-0), making his Carolina League debut, limited the Hillcats to one run on one hit in 5.1 innings of work to help the Dash take the opener of the four-game series.
Christian Marrero led Winston-Salem at the plate with a game-high three hits, including two doubles. The Dash had five players register at least two hits as they improved to 3-2 on the season.
The Dash snared an early lead when Salvador Sanchez smacked an 0-2 pitch from Paul Mildren over the left field wall for a solo home run. Sanchez has registered an RBI in all five games. Winston-Salem plated two more runs in the third inning courtesy of a Greg Paiml RBI single and a run-scoring fielder's choice by Jimmie Gallagher to give the Dash a 3-0
A pair of Lynchburg errors helped the Dash add a run in the fifth inning. With two outs, Sanchez reached on a misplayed ball by Hillcats shortstop Jordy Mercer. Sanchez stole second base and scored when Brent Morel's grounder went through the legs of third baseman Pedro Alverez.
The Hillcats scored their only run in the sixth inning when Lowe loaded the bases with three walks and Matt Hague lifted an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Jose De Los Santos.
The Dash pulled away in the late innings as Kyle Shelton deliver a two-run single in the seventh inning to give Winston-Salem a 6-1 lead. Gallagher contributed a run-scoring double in the eighth inning and Dale Mollenhauer slapped a two-run double off the right field wall in the ninth inning to finalize the scoring. Mollenhauer finished with two hits for the third consecutive game.
Mildren (0-1) took the loss for Lynchburg after tossing 4.2 innings and surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Winston-Salem and Lynchburg square off in game two of this four-game series on Tuesday night at City Stadium. The Dash will send RHP Matt Long (0-1, 6.35) to the mound, while the Hillcats will counter with RHP Matt McSwain (0-0, 6.75). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm.
