Vancouver Canadians News Release
SPOKANE, WA - The Spokane Indians (Rockies) handed the Canadians their first loss in two weeks Saturday night, an 11-2 drubbing at Avista Stadium to snap Vancouver's franchise-best winning streak at nine consecutive games.
It was all Spokane from the start. They scored two in the first, one in the second and three in the third to bounce starter Jimmy Robbins (L, 0-1) from the game then added another run in the fourth to lead 7-0 before the C's could muster their first hit - an Andres Sosa double with one out in the top of the fifth.
Vancouver scored spoiled the shutout in the top of the sixth when PK Morris went deep for the sixth time this year, but Spokane starter Mike Ruff (W, 6-5) was otherwise excellent. The right-hander logged a quality start with six innings in which he gave up one run on three hits with one walk, two hit batters and six strikeouts.
Spokane added four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach and, despite Sosa's ninth inning solo homer, the C's fell 11-2.
Sosa paced the offense with three hits, the first such performance of his career. Riley Tirotta finished with two hits. Will McAffer worked two and a third frames of scoreless relief as the only C's pitcher to not allow a run.
Despite the loss, Vancouver is a league-best 15-7 in the second half and still 2.5 games up on the second-place club in the Northwest League. They are 45-40 through the first 85 games of the year.
The C's and Indians will square off in the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 p.m. RHP Abdiel Mendoza goes for Vancouver opposite Spokane's Mason Green. Coverage is available on CanadiansBaseball.com and the Sportsnet Radio Network.
