
Winning Streak Reaches Six

The Calgary Vipers won a season high sixth straight game as they defeated the Orange County Flyers 6-5 at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California. The game was back and forth with five separate ties and five lead changes until the Vipers went ahead for good in the ninth inning. With the victory Calgary closes out the first half of the Golden Baseball League season with a 26-13 record. The North Division first half winners now own the league's top record as well.
Joe Sergent pitched another terrific ballgame for the Vipers as he went six innings and gave up two earned runs while striking out four and walking only one. Sergent picked up his four no-decision of the year and threw a season high 133 pitches which included 80 strikes alone. Mac Suzuki (3-2) picked up the victory throwing the final three innings of the game and giving up two runs while striking out four. Armando Carrasco (1-1) took the loss in giving up two runs in the final two innings of the game.
At the plate Drew Miller led the way going three-for-five with two runs scored and two runs batted in which included the game winning RBI in the ninth inning. Caonabo Cosme also had another good night going three-for-five as well with two runs scored.
Orange County opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Jimmy Rohan reached on a throwing error, Nick Guerra and Robert Fick both singled to load the bases, and Rohan scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead.
Calgary tied the game at 1-1 in the third as Fehlandt Lentini walked, stole both second and third base for 20 stolen bases on the season, and scored on a throwing error.
The Vipers took the lead in the next inning as Colin Moro was hit by a pitch, Drew Miller reached on a fielding error, Rick Guarno drove in a run with a base hit, and Buddy Morales smacked a clutch two-out run batted in double for a 3-1 advantage.
The Flyers tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the frame as Julian Benavidez smashed a solo home run, Juan Senreiso doubled, and Travis Becktel knocked in a run with a base hit.
Back and forth the game continued in the next half inning as Calgary took their second lead of the game at 4-3 when with two outs Caonabo Cosme singled. Moro was again hit by a pitch, and Miller cashed one run in with a double.
In the bottom of the seventh Orange County took their second lead of the game as Robert Fick launched a solo home run to tie the game, Benavidez singled, and Senreiso recorded a RBI double for a 5-4 advantage.
Right back responded the Snakes in the top of the eighth inning as Miller and Guarno singled, Dillon O'Krane walked to load the bases, and Miller scored to tie the game at 5-5 when Morales reached on a fielding error.
Calgary took their third and final lead in the ninth inning as Cosme singled, moved to second base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Miller RBI single for a 6-5 advantage.
The Vipers play their first second half game on Wednesday July 8th at 8:05 PM MDT as they also wrap up a ten-games-in-nine-days road trip against the Flyers with Hideki Nagasaka (2-0) toeing the rubber.
Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Friday July 10th at 7:05 PM MDT when they host the Yuma Scorpions for a three-game series including games on Saturday July 11th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday July 12th at 1:35 PM MDT. On Friday it will be Mexican Night at the ballpark, on Saturday is Movie Night as Sandlot will be shown on the big screen after the game, and on Sunday it is Bark at the Park and Little League Day where fans can bring their dog to the game and all Little Leaguers get in for free at the Stadium.
