Chico Outlaws News Release

Beginning their 12th and final series before the All-Star break, the Chico Outlaws lead wire-to-wire in a 5-4 victory over the Long Beach Armada.

The first three men in Greg Cadaret's starting nine(Gailen, Luyben and Mehl), all of them all-stars, reached base and scored in the first inning to set the tone for the evening. Gailen singled, Luyben reached on a dropped third strike, and Mehl doubled in an RBI as Chico pounced on Hideki Irabu. Dan Luyben would score the second run of the inning on a wild pitch, and Ryan Brown, batting clean-up in a return to old stomping grounds of his, scored Mehl with an RBI groundout.

Leading 3-0, Donald Brandt took to the mound and would get through the first three innings allowing just one run on Michael Jackson Tribute night in Long Beach.

The fourth inning would see Shane Cronin, signed over the weekend, lead the inning of with a solo home-run off Irabu. Jason Crosland followed with a walk, stolen base and an error, putting him at third base with no outs. Irabu regained some composure, striking out the next two batters coming close to stranding Crosland. However, Jonny Ash would provide what would end up being the game-winning RBI in the inning. Ash chopped a pitch off the plate and hustling down the line, the Outlaws shortstop easily beat the throw. The single scored Crosland to make the score 5-1, and signaling the end of the Outlaws offensive night.

But five would be enough. Long Beach would have an offensive uprising against Brandt in the 4th inning, tallying three runs on four base-hits. However, Brandt would strike out the side in the 5th to end his outing, and Andrew Alvarado and Ben Shockey out of the bullpen would make it stand up.

Alvarado entered in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Ben Shockey would enter in the 8th and return in the 9th looking for the six out save. Shockey got the Armada in order in the ninth inning to record his 8th save of the season.

The Outlaws are now 19-17 on the season, 5-4 in one-run affairs and 7-5 in series-openers. The two teams will face-off for the fifth time on the season in game two of the series Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Michael Martin will go to the mound for the Outlaws as they look to finish the first-half strong and clinch this three-game set in Long Beach.
