Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Charlottetown Islanders and Drummondville Voltigeurs put on an exciting matchup tonight in Drummondville. It was fast-paced, there were a lot of goals, a few fights, and big saves. It was everything you'd want in a game.
Well, almost.
The Islanders seven-game winning streak came to an end, as Charlottetown were defeated by Drummondville 6-3. Six different players would find the back of the net for the Voltigeurs.
Pavel Koltygin would get on the board early for Drummondville, finding the puck to the left of Matthew Welsh and sliding it in to a wide open cage for his seventh on the season.
Benjamin Corbeil would the extend the lead midway through the first period for Drummondville, picking off a Brendon Clavelle pass and wiring it past Welsh for his third goal of the season.
As the second period got underway, the intensity picked up. Both sides were throwing their weight around looking for any advantage over their opponent. Drummondville would pull ahead further when Cedric Desruisseaux streaked down the right wing, made a power move to the front of the neat, and beat Welsh high for his seventh goal of the season.
At that point the pendulum of momentum slowly began to swing back in favour of Charlottetown. Pierre-Olivier Joseph would get one back for Charlottetown, receiving the Brett Budgell pass in the high slot and throwing it on net past Voltigeurs netminder Olivier Rodrigue. For Joseph, that would be his second goal of the season.
The momentum kept swinging towards Charlottetown, even after Felix Lauzon regained the three-goal lead for Drummondville. Drew Johnston won a spirited fight over Alec Reid that lit up the Islanders bench. They'd respond with a goal on the powerplay; Daniel Hardie would finish off a beautiful tic-tac-toe with Joseph and Kevin Gursoy, earning him his eleventh goal of the season. Hardie now sits tied for second in the QMJHL in goals.
As the period drew to a close, the scoring wasn't done for Charlottetown, and once again it was the captain. Joseph would receive the pass from Gursoy and wire a slapshot top shelf past Rodrigue with just 0.1 seconds left in the second period to pull the Islanders within one heading in to the third period.
Unfortunately, that's as close as they would come, as Nicolas Guay and Gregory Kreutzer would add third period goals and ultimately give the Voltigeurs a 6-3 victory.
Joseph finished the game with 2 goals and an assist, while Hardie and Gursoy each continued their hot streaks with multi-point effort. That's now 17 points in Hardie's last 8 games, while Gursoy now has 9 points in his last three.
Matthew Welsh and Olivier Rodrigue each made a number of big saves to keep their respective teams afloat. Welsh made 35 saves in the defeat, while Rodrigue stopped 28 pucks in the victory.
The Islanders are back in action tomorrow on Ocean 100's Saturday Night Hockey, as they take on the Victoriaville Tigres at 7:00pm EST, 8:00pm AST. George Matthews and Aidan Northcott will have the call for you once again.
