Winiecki, Power Play Key in Dubuque
January 4, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A four-goal seconds period - including three power play scores - extended the Waterloo Black Hawks' winning streak to seven consecutive games as they defeated the Dubuque Fighting Saints 6-4 Saturday on the road at Mystique Ice Center.
All of the scoring during the opening 20 minutes came in a 13 second span. At 8:33, Dubuque defenseman Blake Hillman let go of a shot from the left point which changed direction in traffic and flew into the net. However, the Hawks responded on the next shift; a give-and-go play between Tyler Sheehy and Alec McCrea set up Sheehy with an open side for the equalizer. The Hawks outshot Dubuque 13-4 during the first stanza.
Then the Black Hawks seized control in the second. A puck flipped from behind the net over the crossbar was banged in for a goal by Blake Winiecki. As that goal was scored, Seamus Malone slashed Peter Krieger, putting Waterloo on a five-minute major power play. Mark Friedman scored 43 seconds later on a shot from the left point. Only a dozen more seconds passed before Winiecki banged in the rebound of an errant shot when the puck bounced to him off the end boards. Sheehy added one more power play goal during the penalty, finding the puck just outside the crease and flipping it in.
Dubuque tried to rally in the time which remained before intermission and got one goal back when Alexx Privitera capitalized on a steal near the blue line with a shot from the right wing circle. However, Winiecki completed his hat trick with 54.8 seconds left before the break, flicking in a long shot from the blue line while coming up ice.
The Fighting Saints gave themselves a chance in the third period with two goals in the first 4:04. Max McHugh flipped a puck over Cal Petersen's left pad at 1:45, then Privitera blasted a one-timer into the net to draw Dubuque back within two goals. However, Petersen stopped a dozen other chances during the up-and-down final frame and earned his 17th win of the season with 25 total stops.
Friday, the Black Hawks return to Western Conference competition with a bus ride to Sioux Falls and a game against the Stampede. Back in Waterloo next Saturday, the Hawks will face the Des Moines Buccaneers for the first time this season at 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be ordered from the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office by calling (319) 291-7680 or online from waterlooblackhawks.com.
