Ice Put Chokehold on Shot Count, Fall 3-2 in Shootout
January 4, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Indiana Ice News Release
The Indiana Ice lead the USHL in limiting shots on goal with opponents managing only 25.4 shots per game. Saturday night the Ice limited the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders to 17 shots in regulation and blanked the visitors in the five-minute overtime.
Indy is second in the league in shots on net per game averaging 34.1 per contest. Saturday they tested RoughRider goaltender Danny Tirone 35-times in regulation and launched another six shots in overtime.
Despite the statistical domination, Indiana lost 3-2 in a shootout at Pan Am Paviliion. Dylan Steman and Charlie Curti converted in the shootout while the hosts failed to score in the one-on-one extra session.
The Ice scored the first goal of the game at 8:28 of the opening frame when Austin Kosack collaborated with Jacob Pritchard and Patrick Newell to give Indiana their only lead of the matchup. Kosack buried his third goal of the season.
Cedar Rapids potted the next two goals to grab a 2-1 lead heading to the third period. Andrew Poturalski received a "slap" pass from Mark Evan Auk 2:02 after the Kosack score to even the count at one-all.
The visitors scored the only goal of the second period at 7:02 on a lamplighter by Corey Petrash to head to the second intermission holding a 2-1 advantage.
Indy earned a point when they sent the game into overtime on Scott Conway's team-leading 16th goal of the season. Denis Smirnov and Dwyer Tschantz teamed up with Conway 39 seconds into the final frame. Conway extended his point streak to a team-leading seven games which includes 5-goals and 5-assists during the hot streak.
Indiana can look to the failure on the power play as a key to the loss. The Ice failed to convert on any of their five chances with the man-advantage.
Jason Pawloski played well enough in net stopping 15 of 17 shots as Indy garnered three of the four points possible in the weekend set with the RoughRiders.
