Weekend Recap

This past weekend then Wings played part in a home and home series. This time they would be taking on their instate rivals the Brookings Blizzard. Friday night the Wings braved the weather conditions and traveled down to Brookings but were unable to leave town with the victory. It was a defensive battle so it made sense that the scoring would be started by Aberdeen defender Steven Johnson on the power play with assists going to Justin Parizek and Peter Krieger. Brookings was able to bounce right back to tie the game and later in the 2nd take the lead 2-1. Jordan Heller gave Wings fans a taste of what was to come scoring late in the 3rd and sending the game into overtime and an eventual shootout. Assisting on the goal were Parizek and Jake Horton. Aberdeen was unable to top the Blizzard in the shootout falling 3-2. Zach Nagelvoort was in goal for the Wings and kept them in the game with 43 saves on 45 shots. Saturday night the Wings were back home at the Odde where another nice crowd of over 1,300 was waiting to support them and they wouldn't disappoint. Brookings started out the scoring with back to back goals in a matter of 15 sec. of each other. Erik Baskin was able to get the Wings on the board late in the 1st with an unassisted goal. The 2nd period was all Blizzard as they added 2 goals to take a 4-1 lead into the 3rd. It was late in the 3rd when the Wings sparked a fire. After killing off a 5 on 3 Erik Baskin was able to score short handed goal with the assists going to Kyle Haak. That goal came with 1:16 left on the clock. With the empty net the Wings Jake Horton was able to make the hustle play of the game to knock a puck off line that was headed for the empty goal. After that the Wings added another goal to pull to within 1 with :14 sec. remaining on a goal by Jake Horton with the assists going to Parizek. Then with :1.6 seconds left on the clock Jordan Heller once again provided the Wings with the equalizer, scoring an unassisted goal. The game then went scoreless through overtime where once again the Wings had to successfully kill off a penalty. In the shootout Aberdeen was able to get goals from Justin Parizek and Erik Baskin while goaltender Chad Catt saved 4 of the 5 shots he faced to give the Wings a 5-4 win. Catt got credit for the win making 45 saves on 49 shots. For their efforts Erik Baskin and Peter Krieger earned Honorable Mention as NAHL Central Division Stars of the Week!
