Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

It wasn't the booming bats of the previous night, but it was enough Friday for the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to defeat the Abilene Prairie Dogs, by 5-2, the second win against the visitors to Harlingen Field and the fifth consecutive win for the Wings.

With a 11-9 Friday loss by the Fort Worth Cats to the San Angelo Colts, the win brought the Wings even with the Fort Worth club in a second place tie, with 6-4 records.

The WhiteWings scored single runs in the first and second, but the Dogs also had single scores, in the second and third innings to tie it up. That was all for the visitors, as starting pitcher Coleman Stephens kept things in hand. Brownsville native Henry Garcia came in the seventh and also kept the Prairie Dogs scoreless.

The Wings later scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth.

The WhiteWings only had one hit -- a single by Fidel Hernandez -- going into the fifth inning, but they were aided by walks from the arm of Abilene starting pitcher Woods Fine, plus some other breaks.

The Wings ended with five hits and the Prairie Dogs had six.

RGV's hits were by Hernandez, two, L.L. Barroso, James Mays and Miguel Alfonso.

The two clubs close their first series on Saturday, then the WhiteWings have their only two-days off this season on Sunday and Monday.

Celson Polanco will start for the WhiteWings on Saturday.

The Colts lead the lead at 8-2.

The Edinburg Roadrunners defeated their "crosstown" rivals, the McAllen Thunder, 4-3.. The Roadrunners are 5-5 in the early season, Abilene is 3-7 and McAllen is 2-8.
