Edinburg Roadrunners News Release

EDINBURG, Texas--- The Edinburg Roadrunners announced that they have signed former major leaguer Tony Phillips, who played 18 major league seasons with seven different teams.

Phillips last played in the majors in 1999 with the Oakland A's. He was also a part of the Oakland A's team that won the World Series in 1989.

During his 18-season career, Phillips compiled 2,023 hits, 160 homeruns, 819 RBI, 1,300 runs scored, 1,319 walks and a career batting average of .266.

After winning the World Series with the A's, Phillips joined the Detroit Tigers where he played for five seasons and then was traded to the California Angels in 1995. He also spent time with the Chicago White Sox, Anaheim Angels, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

In 2011, Phillips played with the Yuma Scorpions alongside former teammate Jose Canseco where he played 24 games and batted .269 and 12 walks.

Phillips is expected to be in the starting lineup for the Roadrunners tonight against the McAllen Thunder and is expected to bring leadership to the team.

"I think he is going to help us offensively for one, and he is going to bring a tremendous amount of leadership and he has a lot of big league experience so he can keep these guys in tune with the game and keep everything relaxed," said Roadrunners manager Vince Moore, "He is a great addition for us."

The Roadrunners and Thunder will play the second game of their four-game series tonight at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Ryan Smith (1-0) is expected to face Brian Murphy (1-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
