Wings Stadium To Host Third Curling Open House

Kalamazoo, MI- The Wings Stadium Complex, which is also home to The Annex and The Cube, announces curling open house, operated by the Kalamazoo Curling Club, will occur on Saturday, May 3rd.

The afternoon will begin with a Learn to Curl from 12-4 p.m. Later in the evening, the Annex will have open ice for curling from 6-10 p.m.

Learn to Curl will include 20 minutes of pre-ice instruction followed by one hour of ice time with further instruction. Feel free to sign up for more than one session. The cost of the program is $12 per person per hour of ice time.

The fee for the open ice is $15 or under depending on membership level. Individuals can inquire about membership at the event on May 3rd or by email (kent@kalamazoocurlingclub.com).

The open ice is a perfect opportunity to hone your game. Staff will also be on hand to answer questions. We recommend getting a group of eight together and renting a whole sheet. Play a game with your friends. Or, bring a team of four and we'll try to find another team for you to play. Or, just come and throw some rocks.

As a reminder, we can only fit so many people on the ice at once so schedule your ice time when you call. Walk-ins will be welcomed but scheduled curlers will take precedence for ice times. Due to a limited amount of equipment we can only fit 24 people on the ice at once. If you have a group, give us all the names when you register and we'll do our best to keep you together. If you have already gone through our learn to curl session, we recommend the afternoon open ice session. Curling is a team sport played on a rectangular sheet of carefully prepared ice by two teams of four players each. The object of the game is to place more rocks near the center of a target painted on the ice than the opposing team. Teams take turns sliding these heavy, polished stones down the ice towards a target called the house.

Two sweepers with brooms accompany each rock and use timing equipment and their best judgment along with direction from their other teammates to help direct the stones to their resting place. The complex nature of stone placement and shot selection has led some to refer to curling as "chess on ice".

Based on the popularity of the open houses, Wings Stadium is researching the possibility of having drop-in curling on Friday's and Saturday's this summer with league' starting in October.

Stadium Management Company owns the Wings Stadium Complex and the Kalamazoo Wings hockey team. The Wings Stadium Complex is comprised of three buildings; Wings Stadium seats more than 5,100 fans for K-Wings home games, 8,000 for festival seating events and 4,500 for reserved seating shows. The Annex seats 1,367 for ice events and can seat up to 2,850 for non-ice events such as concerts, car, boat, and trade shows. The Cube is the newer of the three facilities and plays host to both ice and non-ice events. All three buildings are available for rental and feature numerous catering and meeting opportunities.
