Wings Hold Off Sox

August 26, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

The Red Wings hung on to beat the Pawtucket Red Sox 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. Matthew LeCroy hit a towering home run in the third inning which eventually proved to be the winning run. The win pulled the Wings to within one game of the wild card spot. TWSN cable 26/215 will show the game Sunday at 7 pm.

Rochester starter Kevin Slowey struck out the first batter he faced on three pitches, but then surrended three consecutive singles, as the Red Sox took a 1-0 lead. With runners on first and second, he settled down to strike out Brandon Moss and got Jeff Bailey to fly out to center.

Facing knuckle-ball pitcher Charles Zink in the first, Matt Tolbert hit a one-out single and stole second. Darnell McDonald walked, and Tolbert and McDonald completed a double steal. That put McDonald in a tie with Pawtucket's Jacoby Ellsbury for the league lead in stolen bases at 32.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, Chris Basak lined a shot down the left field line for a double. Oeltjen knocked a ball down the first base line and into the corner in right field, reaching third base on a stand-up triple to drive in Basak, giving the Wings the lead 2-1. Tolbert hit a routine gound ball to second, but was misplayed allowing Oelten to score. Tolbert stole second, giving him his third steal of the game and 10th of the season.

Leading off the bottom of the third, LeCroy launched a home run over the left field fence, giving him his first home run since May 20th, and giving the Wings a 3-1 lead.

Crusing along, like he has all season, Slowey retired seven straight batters at one point before getting into a little trouble in the 5th. He allowed a two out single to Joe McEwing and walked two batters to load the bases. Slowey got out of it by striking out Brandon Moss for the third time to end the inning.

That was it for Slowey, and after 106 pitches, Stan Cliburn opted to bring in Jay Sawatski to start the sixth inning. Bobby Scales lined a ball towards left and a hustling McDonald fielded the ball cleanly and threw out Scales at second who was trying to stretch a single into a double.

Sawatski worked into the eighth, after allowing a pair of one-out singles. Bobby Korecky came in and got a strikeout for the second out, but then Bobby Scales tagged a two-run triple that made it a one-run game, 4-3. A hard-hit ground ball by George Kottaras deflected off Korecky's glove to Tolbert at second, who threw out Kottaras for the third out. Korecky record his league-leading 34th save.

NOTES: Stan Cliburn was ejected by third base umpire Brent Persinger in the seventh inning.... Center fielder Oeltjen made an outstanding catch during the second inning. Oeltjen charged in on a ball, slid, and made a diving catch to take a hit away from Junior Spivey. Doug Deeds made a running catch in the top of the 7th and doubled up Jacoby Ellsbury to end the inning and keep the Red Sox from scoring...McDonald stole his 33rd base in the 5th inning; he's tied with Ellsbury for the league lead....The Wings had five stolen bases, the most since June 19, 2003...Tolbert is the first Wing since Brian Roberts to steal three bases in one game. Roberts did it May 12, 2001 against Charlotte at Frontier Field....Morales had an 0-for-4 day, dropping his batting average to .317. Buffalo's Ben Francisco moved ahead of Morales for the league batting title after getting two hits Sunday and raising his average to .321.....C/INF Chris Heintz was called up to the Twins after Joe Mauer left Saturday's game against Baltimore (hamstring tightness). The Twins placed LHP Dennys Reyes on the DL....Slowey hadn't had much luck in the month of August. In five starts prior to Sunday Slowey has a 1-1 record with a minuscule 1.35 ERA. In 33.1 innings of work, Slowey has allowed just six runs (five earned) on 26 hits while walking six and striking out 18... With today's win, the Red Wings cliched their fourth consecutive winning season - the first time since 1966-1976, when Rochester had a team record 11 consecutive seasons with a winning record..
