
Bats Clip Losing Streak, Win 3-1

LOUISVILLE, KY-Center fielder Jay Bruce and first baseman Jesse Gutierrez hit solo home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Louisville Bats snapped a four-game losing streak in a 3-1 victory over the Columbus Clippers in front of 7,268 at Louisville Slugger Field on Sunday evening.
Bruce went 3-for-4 and Gutierrez went 2-for-4 on the evening, while leadoff hitter Paul Janish scored the game's opening run in the first inning when Bats first baseman Joey Votto hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
Clippers left fielder Kory Casto scored the lone Columbus run in the top of the sixth inning from third base when Ryan Langerhans grounded out to first base. As a team, Columbus could manage only four hits on the night.
Starting pitcher Ramon Ramirez struck out six Clippers in four innings of scoreless baseball for the Bats. Reliever Brad Salmon (2-2) picked up the win after striking out one in three innings, while Marcus McBeth picked up his eighth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
Chris Michalak (5-5) allowed seven hits in six innings and gave up all three runs for Columbus. He struck out two and walked a pair.
The Bats will welcome the 2007 International League West Division champions Toledo Mud Hens to Louisville Slugger Field on Monday evening. RHP Victor Santos (0-1, 1.26) of Louisville and RHP Jordan Tata (4-3, 3.09) of Toledo are the probable starters for the 7:05p.m. first pitch.
