Wings Fall on Sunday Afternoon
February 27, 2023 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Aberdeen Wings News Release
A hard fought game leaves the Wings earning only one point on the weekend. The Wings dropped the second game of the weekend to the North Iowa Bulls 6-3. The Wings battled until the end trying to make a late third period comeback for the second straight night but the deficit was just too big this time around.
In the first period the Bulls got on the board first with a goal coming from Byron Hartley on the power play. That would be the first of two goals on the power play of the night and the first of two for Bulls' Byron Hartley. The Wings would be shutout in the first period to North Iowas' Mitch Day who was back in net. The Wings would outshoot the Bulls 20-9 in the first period.
Then in the second period the Bulls would score early on the power play. This time the goal coming from Nolan Abraham. With more good scoring chances from the Wings they still couldn't figure out Day. With 8:41 left in the second Byron Hartley would get his second on the night making it a 3-0 game in favor of the Bulls. The Wings were able to get on the powerplay and Devon Carlstrom did not let that opportunity slip as he put one top shelf to finally get the Wings on the board.
In the third period the Wings would go on the powerplay and score, but for the second time in the weekend the goal would get called off due to a knocked off net by Mitch Day. That would give the Bulls some momentum and they would go on to score two goals coming from Eli Miller 9:26 into the third and Blake Ulve 11:33 into the third. Finally Kye Contessa put another one past Day making it a 5-2 game. The Wings would decide to pull goaltender Geno Pichora in hopes of doing exactly what the did the previous night but Jack Mesic would get the puck into the empty net making it 6-2 with only .55 seconds left to play. The Wings would once again go on the powerplay and Owen Benoit would send a quick shot past Day to make it a final score of 6-3.
The Wings outshot the Bulls 45-31 with Geno Pichora stopping 26/31 and Mitch Day stopping 42/45. The Wings stay in second place by only one point going into next weekend as they are once again at home this time facing the Minot Minotauros.
