Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - With a number of players injured and a makeshift lineup in use, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings nonetheless persevered and defeated league-leading Edinburg for the first time this season, taking a 9-3 decision Monday night at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings improved to 15-22 with the victory, while Edinburg fell to 28-9. RGV banged out 13 hits in the contest, scoring four runs in the first inning and five more in the sixth. WhiteWings reliever Rob Parfett (1-0) came on to relieve injured starter Pedro Fernando in the first inning and pitched a strong game, going seven and one-third innings. Parfett struck out two and walked four while allowing only one earned run. Ryan Bennett finished up, striking out the side in the ninth inning.
The victory was the first in seven tries this season for the WhiteWings against the Coyotes. Neomar Flores (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Edinburg, pitching five and two-thirds innings. He allowed six earned runs while striking out five and walking five. The Coyotes committed two errors, including the 17th of the season for shortstop Jermy Acey, while the WhiteWings committed one error.
In the bottom of the first, leadoff batter Kevin Whiteside walked and stole second. Omar Bramasco singled him in and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Antoin Gray followed with an RBI single and advanced to second on a base hit by Sergio Cairo. Denys Lantigua and Casey Clary added RBIs to give the WhiteWings a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the WhiteWings scored five runs, all with two outs. Bramasco walked and eventually scored on a balk, while Gray blasted his team-leading ninth home run, a solo shot off the clubhouse in left. Additional runs scored on an error and a single by DH Sonel Sena, promoted to the active roster before the game.
Abigail Sandoval had three hits for RGV, while Gray, Cairo and Sena had two each. The Coyotes scored three runs over the first three innings but were shut out over the final six frames.
WhiteWings manager Eddie Dennis was ejected in the third inning for arguing a balk call. Fernando left the game in the first due to an undisclosed injury.
Righthander A. J. Bozenhard (3-3, 5.62 ERA) will get the start Tuesday night for the WhiteWings. He will be opposed by Bric Steed (3-1, 3.69) of the Coyotes. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field.
