Alexandria Aces News Release

Alexandria, LA; June 27, 2006 - A dramatic ninth-inning rally came up just short Tuesday at Bringhurst Field, as the Laredo Broncos held on for a 5-4 victory over the Alexandria Aces.

The Aces trailed 5-3 in the ninth inning but got leadoff singles from Jared Boyd and Keto Anderson. After two bunts, one of which was misplayed by Laredo lefthander Jonathan Pusateri, the Aces trailed 5-4 with the bases loaded and nobody out. But Pusateri got groundouts from Josh Tranum and Adam Bonner, and James Lewis came out of the bullpen to get Luis Guance to ground out to second base to preserve the win. Alexandria has lost six consecutive games.

Laredo took the lead with four runs in the seventh inning against Alexandria starter Buddy Bengel (3-3). Former Ace Cameron McGuire led off the inning with his third hit, and David Fowler followed with a bunt single. The runners moved up a base on a groundout. Mike Serrata then hit a ground ball to Cleatus Davidson at second base. Davidson's throw home hit McGuire and caromed to the backstop, allowing Fowler to score to tie the game. Two pitches later, Arnoldo Ponce hit his first homer of the season to center field to give Laredo a stunning 5-3 lead.

The Aces had gone ahead 3-1 in the third inning with a rally started by singles from Davidson and Trey Beamon (2-for-5) and finished with RBI singles by Adam Bonner and Richard Paz (3-for-4). Laredo reliever Dan Valentin (1-1) worked 2.2 innings to earn the win. Aces manager Ricky VanAsselberg activated himself before the game as an emergency catcher due to injuries to Alexandria catchers Luis Espinosa and Ryan Smith. VanAsselberg went 0-for-3.

The series against Laredo concludes tomorrow at 10:35 a.m. on City of Alexandria Kids' Day. Aces righthander Santo Hernandez will start against Laredo ace Darryl Roque. The Aces continue their homestand through Saturday at Bringhurst Field. For more information, call 473-ACES or log on to www.myacesbaseball.com.
