Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

HARLINGEN - Starters Bric Steed and A. J. Bozenhard hooked up in a classic pitcher's duel Tuesday night, with Steed's Edinburg Coyotes eventually claiming a hard-fought 1-0 decision over Rio Grande Valley in United League Baseball action at Harlingen Field.

Edward Ramirez came on to notch his 14th save in the ninth, but it was not without drama. Sergio Cairo led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Luis Blanco. Cairo then advanced to third on a passed ball. Denys Lantigua struck out on a nasty 3-2 pitch, setting the stage for Kevin Whiteside, who grounded out to shortstop to end the game. The call at first was close, bang-bang, with the WhiteWings arguing but to no avail.

Bozenhard (3-4) was the tough-luck loser, pitching to one batter in the eight inning. He allowed only two hits and walked three while striking out one in seven-plus innings of work. In the top of the eighth, Jermy Acey walked, and after a conference on the mound which included WhiteWings' manager Eddie Dennis, pitching coach Pedro Borbon and the team trainer, Bozenhard was lifted for Nibaldo Acosta. Acey stole second and scored with two outs on an RBI single to right by Garvi Arias.

Edinburg starter Bric Steed (4-1) went eight shutout innings, striking out eight and walking three while allowing only three hits. Cairo had two of the WhiteWings' hits, while DH Carlos Mendoza and Whiteside had one each. Mendoza returned to the lineup after a long absence while recovering from injury.

The WhiteWings had a good scoring chance in the third, with Casey Clary reaching on an error and Mendoza singling. With runners at second and third, Omar Bramasco grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat. RGV left two runners on in the sixth, as Blanco grounded into a fielder's choice with runners at first and third and two outs.

Bozenhard, a rookie, again had an impressive start. He did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. The WhiteWings' player of the month for May left to a standing ovation in the eighth inning, even receiving congratulations from Edinburg manager Vince Moore.

The finale of the three-game series is set for 12:05 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, as the WhiteWings are presenting their "Big Splash" promotion, with many water-related activities planned. Danny Bonilla (2-0, 7.39 ERA) and Julio Ruiz (4-0, 1.93 ERA) are the scheduled starters for Rio Grande Valley and Edinburg, respectively.
