Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - The Harlingen WhiteWings (14-22) couldn't hold another late lead as the Alexandria Aces (18-17) scored four runs in the top of the ninth to take a 7-6 lead. Tonight, however, the WhiteWings had a late surprise of their own, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 8-7 at Harlingen Field.
With the WhiteWings up 6-3 after eight innings, Brian Daly came in looking for the save, but gave up an infield-single to Bryan Sabatella. Luis Guance followed by reaching on a fielder's choice on which no out was recorded. Selwyn Langaigne then hit an RBI-single to make it 6-4.
Chris Street (0-1) came in and gave up a two-run double to Palmer Karr Jr. to tie the game. Two outs later, Jose Umbria reached on an error to score Karr, giving the Aces a 7-6 lead.
Wayne Hedden (1-3) came in looking for his first save. Ryan Fox drew a one-out walk and Argelis Nunez followed with a bouncer to third that could have been an inning ending double play, but Homey Ovalles dropped the throw from Tyler Farrar, so no outs were recorded. David Fowler tied the game with an RBI-double and Terry Roblez hit a walk-off sacrifice fly.
The Aces took a 1-0 lead in the second. Blake Butler led off with a single against Todd Lutz, moved to second on a Umbria single, to third when Ovalles grounded into a fielder's choice, and scored on an Eddie Fitzpatrick single.
The lead didn't last, as the WhiteWings struck for three against Ramon Portillo in the bottom of the second. With two outs, David Cardona and Candelario Perez singled. Bub Bergstrom followed with a two-run triple and Kevin Griffin hit an RBI-single.
The Aces got one back in the fifth when Guance hit his seventh home run of the season to make it 3-2.
In the sixth, Jose Umbria reached on an error. With two outs, Sabatella drew a seven-pitch walk and Guance hit an RBI-single to knock out Lutz.
In the bottom of the inning, Perez singled and Bergstrom walked. Griffin followed with a two-run double. One batter later, Portillo was pulled. Angel Guzman came in and gave up and RBI-double to Ryan Fox, making it 6-3.
The WhiteWings travel to San Angelo for the first of three tomorrow night at 7:05. Left-hander Jorge Lugo (3-0) will face left-hander Frank James Jr. (1-3).
