San Angelo Colts News Release
LAREDO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts (20-16) came from behind and hung on for an 8-5 win over the Laredo Broncos (18-17) in the rubber match of the three-game series on Thursday night at Veterans Field. In the process, the Colts were able to prevent Laredo from taking second place in the standings, as the Colts are now 1.5 games ahead of both the Broncos and Aces for second place after Alexandria lost to Harlingen.
The Colts, who have won four of their last five and six of nine from Laredo this season, called upon their closer Miliade Venas for the second time this series to come in with runners on in the bottom of the ninth. In the series opener, Venas closed out a 7-2 Colts win with the tying run on deck and tonight, the right-hander entered the game with the tying run at the plate and the Colts on top 8-5. With two on and two out, he got Luany Sanchez to hit into a game-ending 4-6 fielder's choice, giving the Colts two out of three in their first trip to Laredo and earning his second save as a Colt.
San Angelo took a 1-0 first inning lead for the second straight night when Andres Rodriguez doubled home Tyrone Pendergrass, who reached on an error causing the run to be unearned. Laredo quickly responded, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first against Colts starter Luke Massetti (4-1), who picked up the win, allowing just those three runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work. Massetti also retired 14 out of 16 before exiting the game.
The Colts used the long ball to tie the game and then take the lead as Jose Torres ripped a two-run homer in the fourth, tying the game at 3-3. Torres was 3-for-4 with a HBP and has now reached base in 30 consecutive games for San Angelo. Broncos starter Andy Schon (3-2) gave up another two-run shot in the fifth, as Aaron Cone hit his fourth home run of the year to put the Colts ahead 5-3. The Colts scored in their third consecutive inning in the sixth when Pendergrass hit a two-out RBI double, putting his own on-base streak at 33 and giving the Colts a 6-3 edge.
After Laredo cut it to 6-4 with an RBI single by Dwayne White in the seventh, the Colts scored twice in the top of the ninth off Nathan Crawford on an RBI single by Charley Belew and a bases-loaded walk by Wyn Diggs to make it 8-4. In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Mulle, in his third inning of relief work, gave up a run and allowed two men to reach before giving way to Venas.
The Colts return home for a brief homestand against Harlingen over the weekend. On Friday, June 20, there will be a Glow-in-the-dark logo baseball giveaway, sponsored by AEP and Suddenlink.
