Coyotes Lose in Extras

AMARILLO, Texas- The Edinburg Coyotes and the Amarillo Dillas were not able to decide the winner of the final game of the series in nine innings. They needed two extra innings as the Dillas beat the Coyotes 7-5 in walk off fashion Thursday night at the Dilla Villa. Eric Montoya tried to win the third game of the series for the Coyotes but he had no hand in the decision. He pitched seven innings and gave up three runs on eight hits. He also struck out six.

The Dillas caught a break in the in the bottom of the second inning that allowed them to score the first run of the game. After A.J. Johnson doubled to lead off the inning, Joel Gonzalez hit a fly ball to right field that should have been a routine catch for the final out of the inning. The wind was blowing so hard that the ball never made it out to Eric Gonzalez and landed in shallow right field that allowed Johnson to score. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Dillas got three runs on two hits. Jonathan Reynoso started the inning with a low line drive into right field. Then after a walk and an error, the bases were loaded for Danny Bravo. Bravo hit a wind cheating line drive that sliced into the left field corner that brought in three runs to make the score 4-0.

The Coyotes cut into the Dillas' lead in the top of the sixth inning. Eddie Wilson started the inning with a bunt single then moved to second on the throwing error by Andrew Wong. After a ground out by Angelo Fermin, Eric Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and Patrick Gaylord walked on four pitches to load the bases for Mayobanex Santana. Santana hit a 2-1 pitch down the third base line for a three run double that made the score 4-3.

The Coyotes all series long battled with the Dillas and it was no exception in the top of the ninth inning as they trailed by one. Daryl Jones started the inning off with a single into right field and then he had a stolen base that put him in scoring position for the tying run. Robert Matlock stepped to the plate with the tying run on second and he laced a double down the left field line off of Drew Jackson to tie the gave at 4-4. Jackson then hit Alex Entrekin and walked Wilson to load the bases for Fermin. Fermin then chopped the ball to first base and he beat the throw for an RBI fielder's choice that gave the Coyotes a 5-4 advantage.

However, the Dillas played small ball in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game off of closer Julio Castro. Josh Ashton led the inning off with a single to right and then he was bunted over to second base by Reynoso. Ashton came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Brachold to tie the game at five. The Coyotes had chances to take the lead in the extra innings but they did not capitalize. Reynoso ended the game with a walk off two run home run to deep left field off of reliever Bric Steed. Steed with the loss now falls to 0-3 on the year.

The Coyotes head home for six games starting on Friday night at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Alexandria Aces will come into town for a three game series starting Friday night and ending Sunday evening. Then the Laredo Broncos make their first trip of the season to Edinburg on Monday night.
