WICHITA TAKES SET OPENER

The Wichita Wingnuts made it back-to-back wins for the first time in 2016 Monday, as they opened up a four-game set against Laredo with a 9-6 win over the Lemurs at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Leading 6-2 entering the seventh, the Wingnuts bullpen started to falter, loading the bases with three walks to start the inning. After a double and another walk reloaded the bases, Wichita brought in their newest member, Fabian Roman. The righty allowed two of the three inherited runners to score, but retired all three he faced in the inning to keep Laredo from taking the lead. The Wingnuts answered right away, regaining the lead in the bottom half. Dustin Geiger picked up the go-ahead knock, singling Brent Clevlen home for his third hit of the night. Wichita added another run later in the frame and one more in the eighth to push the margin to three. In the ninth, Wichita turned to closer Frankie Reed, who surrendered a lead-off double but retired the side in order from there to wrap up his second save of the year and send Wichita to back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

WALK THIS WAY

Despite playing just eight and a half innings last night, the contest between the Wingnuts and Lemurs took three hours and 44 minutes to complete last night's game, the second-longest nine inning game for Wichita this year. The main culprit for the lengthy contest was free passes, as the two teams combined to walk 21 hitters in the ballgame. The Wingnuts staffed issued a season-high 12 walks, while tying their season-high on the offensive side by drawing nine from Laredo.

GEIGER GETTING GOING

After going the first nine games this season without driving in a run, Dustin Geiger has collected two RBIs in each of the last two for the Wingnuts. On Sunday, the former Chicago Cubs farmhand picked up his first RBI of the year when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and added a second when he drew a bases loaded walk later in the afternoon. Last night, Geiger went 3-for-5 and drove in runs in more traditional ways, blasting his first homer of the year in the fifth, and singling home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
