Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - With the contest tied at six entering the bottom of the seventh, the Wichita Wingnuts regained the lead with two runs in the frame on their way to a 9-6 victory over the Laredo Lemurs Monday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Leading 6-2 entering the top of the seventh, Wichita (4-7) saw their bullpen falter. The Wingnuts shuffled through two different relievers against the first five hitters of the inning, but none were retired and Laredo (6-5) scored two to cut the lead in half. The newest Wingnut Fabian Roman (1-0) was then called upon with the bases loaded and no outs, and retired the next three in order, although two of the inherited runners scored to tie it.
The Wingnuts were not to be denied on Monday however, as they bounced right back in the home half. After the first two reached against Kawakami Usui (0-1), Dustin Geiger plated the go-ahead run with a single. Later in the inning, a wild pitch brought T.J. Mittelstaedt in to give Wichita a two-run cushion.
Roman came out for a second inning of work in the eighth, and after allowing the first two Lemurs to get on base, was helped out by a double play to post a zero.
Brent Clevlen added an insurance marker in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single, and Frankie Reed then came on to close it out in the ninth to collect his second save.
With the Lemurs leading 2-1, Wichita put together a big inning in the fourth. Richard Prigatano got things started for the home team, singling in his team-leading 10th run of the year to tie it up. Two batters later, the Wingnuts started a run of three straight run-scoring knocks, as Brent Dean, Leo Vargas, and Christian Stringer all collected RBIs to push the lead to 5-2.
One inning later Geiger launched his first home run of the season, one of three hits on the night for the first baseman, which stretch the lead to four.
The Wingnuts and Lemurs continue their four-game series Tuesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Vetern righty Tim Brown (1-0, 4.20) will be on the hill for Wichita, while Laredo will counter with right-hander Danny Moskovits (1-0, 0.00). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
