WINGNUTS LOSE IN 9TH

Wichita held a 3-2 lead entering the ninth but was unable to hold it as Lincoln came back with a pair of runs in the final frame to beat the Wingnuts 4-3 Saturday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. After a Christian Ibarra RBI single tied the game at three, Curt Smith drove in the winning run with a fielder's choice. Brent Dean reached on an error to start the home half and reached third, but Wichita was unable to score him, dropping the Wingnuts to 0-2 for the first time since starting 0-3 in 2010. Lincoln scored first for the second straight night, plating a run four batters in, and adding a Smith solo homer in the fourth to make it 2-0. Wichita pulled one back in the fourth on back-to-back two-out triples from Harrison Kain and Dean before grabbing the lead in the sixth. Dean started that two-out rally with an infield single, moving to second on a wild pitch. Leo Vargas and Christian Stringer followed with consecutive run-producing singles to give Wichita their first lead of the season. Unfortunately for the Wingnuts the bullpen faltered, leaving Wichita two outs shy of closing the door on their first win.

CAPRA'S SOLID DEBUT

Left-hander Anthony Capra made his season debut last night, making it five straight seasons he has suited up for Wichita. The former Wichita State Shocker fell behind 2-0 in the first four innings, but improved as the game went along. Capra ended up turning in Wichita's first quality start of the young season, allowing two runs on six hits over seven innings. The southpaw also added five strikeouts to his franchise-record total, pushing it to 288. The Wingnuts have now gotten at least six innings from their first two veteran starters and will look for that trend to continue tonight with another veteran, righty Tim Brown, slated to make his 2016 debut.

KAIN STAYS HOT

After going 4-for-4 on Opening Night, Harrison Kain continued his hot start, picking up hits in his first two at-bats last night to give him a 6-for-6 start to the season. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native ended up 2-for-4, and his .750 average leads the American Association through two games. Kain also picked up the Wingnuts first steal of the year last night in the second.
