Wichita Wingnuts News Release
LITTLE FALLS, NJ- The Wichita Wingnuts (55-26) beat the Can-Am League's New Jersey Jackals (40-38) 7-5 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Tied at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, Abel Nieves led off with a line drive single to left field. Cole Armstrong followed with an 11-pitch walk to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Jared McDonald bounced a single through the right-side to score Nieves with the go-ahead run. Armstrong took third on Ryan Khoury's foul flyout down the right field line and scored the Wingnuts' fifth run on a wild pitch from Jackals' starter Wes Roemer.
The wild pitch came during an at bat to Jake Kahaulelio. Following a called strike on a 2-1 pitch in the same at bat, Kahaulelio and all three members of Wichita's coaching staff were ejected by the umpiring crew. Jonathan Davis finished Kahaulelio's at bat and lined a single to left that chased home McDonald to make it 6-3.
New Jersey rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Danny Rams doubled home Nick Giarraputo to cut Wichita's lead to 6-4. Later in the inning, Jeremy Barnes drew a bases loaded walk against Nick Walters to pull the Jackals within one run. Walters escaped the inning when Brandon Jones hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
Jared McDonald hit a solo home run to right-center in the top of the eighth to give the Wingnuts an insurance run. On the previous pitch, McDonald just missed a home run down the right field line that was ruled foul.
Josh Dew struck out two in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 21st save, which set a new Wingnuts' single-season record.
Josh Stone picked up the win for Wichita, allowing five earned runs on eight hits over five and one-third innings. Stone walked three and struck out two.
Roemer took the loss, allowing six earned runs on six hits in five and two-thirds. Roemer walked five and struck out two.
Wichita took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. McDonald and Khoury hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. After a wild pitch moved runners to second and third, Kahaulelio brought in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right-center. Rodriguez then drove in Khoury from third with a groundball to second. Rodriguez has drive in a run in eight consecutive contests.
The Jackals responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. Jose Cuevas and Gaetano Giunta started the inning with singles. Two batters later, Barnes lined a single to left that scored Cuevas. Brandon Jones tied the game with an RBI double down the right field line. Bryan Sabatella made it 3-2 New Jersey on a groundout to shortstop.
McDonald tied the game with a groundout to first in the top of the fourth.
McDonald finished with three hits, three runs, and three RBIs. Daniel Bennett and Lincoln Holdzkom each worked a scoreless inning of relief. Armstrong drew three walks.
The Wingnuts finish their 16-game road trip with a record of 11-5, including a 9-1 mark against the Can-Am League.
