Wingnuts Drop Series Opener to Saints

ST. PAUL, MN- The Wichita Wingnuts (57-41) lost 8-3 to the St. Paul Saints (52-46) at Midway Stadium on Saturday night.

Former Wingnut Joseph Spiers hit a three-run triple down the right field line in the bottom of the second to give the Saints a 4-0 lead. Adam Frost followed with a popfly single down the right field line to make it 5-0.

A two-out error by Miles Durham in the top of the fourth allowed the Wingnuts to score two runs without a hit, and cut the Saints' lead to three.

St. Paul added a run in the bottom of the fourth on an Ole Sheldon sacrifice fly, and two more in the sixth on a two-out, two-run homer to left from Jon Hurst.

John Rodriguez drove in the game's final run with an RBI groundout in the top of the ninth.

Spiers singled leading off the first, stole second, and came home on an RBI single to left from Frost to give St. Paul a 1-0 lead.

Nick Walters and Jared Simon each made their 56th appearance of the season to increase their new American Association record.

Jeff Nadeau started for the Wingnuts and took the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits in five innings. Nadeau walked four and struck out two.

Luke Anderson started for the Saints and took a no-decision. Anderson allowed two unearned runs on two hits in three and two-thirds with five walks and two strikeouts. Anderson left with the lead but did not qualify for the win. Robert Coe earned the victory for the Saints.

Rodriguez had three hits for the Wingnuts.

The Wingnuts begin postseason play next Wednesday night against either the Laredo Lemurs or the Grand Prairie AirHogs.
