
Wingnuts Defeat RailCats in Historic Fashion

Gary, IN - Wichita exacted some revenge for last night's doubleheader sweep by the RailCats with an 18-5 victory over the Gary SouthShore on Wednesday night. Wichita improved to 59-30 while the RailCats dropped to 50-38.
The RailCats set season-highs for runs allowed in a game (18), hits allowed in a game (23), and largest margin of defeat (13).
C.J. Ziegler hit for the first cycle in Wingnuts history with a 4-for-6 effort with four runs driven in.
Ryan Khoury walked to start the game then stole second base. Knuckleballer Joseph Zeller then uncorked two wild pitches; the second of which scored the first run in Khoury to make it 1-0.
C.J. Zeigler followed and hit a line drive solo home run down the left field line to make it 2-0. With two outs, Brent Clevlan doubled and scored on an error at short by Zac Mitchell on a ground ball off the bat of Abel Nieves. It was 3-0 Wichita after one.
In the third, the RailCats lost a pair of fly balls in the lights as Wichita took advantage and scored four times. After back-to-back singles to begin the inning, C.J. Ziegler lifted a fly ball to center and Drew Martinez didn't see it off the bat. Ziegler went all the way to third for his first triple in his career to score a pair.
Brent Clevlan then lifted a fly ball to center and Martinez again didn't see it off the bat and Nick Liles was unable to reach out and grab it in shallow center. Clevlan scored on a groundout by David Amberson to make it 7-0 Wingnuts after the top of the third.
Wichita took an 8-0 lead in the top of the fourth with a bases loaded walk by Brent Clevlan. Taylor Sewitt avoided further damage in the inning by getting Abel Nieves to ground in a double play.
Clevlan's run ended the line score of Joesph Zeller who went three and a third innings. He allowed eight runs, six earned, on seven hits and three walks. Zeller threw two wild pitches and struck out four in his RailCats debut.
In the bottom of the inning, the RailCats slapped three straight hits off of Junior Guerra. Reid Fronk's base hit scored Brian Kolb to make it 8-1.
Wichita put the finishing touches on the game with a three-run sixth inning. Abel Nieves doubled in Brent Clevlan and later David Amberson drove in a run with a single. With Taylor Sewitt still on the mound, Jake Kahoulelio drew a bases loaded walk to take an 11-1 lead for the Wingnuts.
The Wingnuts scored six times in the seventh. David Amberson drove in his third run of the game with a single. Later, Jared McDonald cleared the loaded bases with a three-run double.
John Rodriguez drove another in with a sac fly and Ziegeler then doubled to close out the scoring for the Wingnuts with a double.
In the ninth, John Rodriguez doubled in Madison Beaird and Ziegler followed him with a single to complete his cycle and take an 18-5 win for Wichita.
Junior Guerra picked up his ninth win of the season with a six-inning effort. He struck out nine and allowed four runs on nine hits and one walk.
The RailCats and Wingnuts complete their four-game series tomorrow at 12:10 p.m. LHP Anthony Capra (6-2, 3.84 ERA) will throw for Wichita, the RailCats sent RHP Billy Spottiswood (5-3, 3.55 ERA).
