St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (August 21, 2013) - The St. Paul Saints live pig mascot with a celebrity-inspired name has become a staple of the Saints baseball experience ever since its inception back in 1992. The unveiling of the new pig's name at the World's Largest Game of Catch each year is one of the most anticipated events of the baseball off-season. The Saints are excited to announce that this staple will be tied to a staple of the Twin Cities community for the foreseeable future. Savers Thrift Stores has agreed to sponsor the Saints pig through the completion of the 2014 season.

Since its foundation in 1954, Savers has been operating on the core values of giving back and providing opportunities. Due to their partnership with local charities, every time you donate reusable clothing or household items to Savers, they give back to nonprofit organizations such as Disabled American Veterans and the Epilepsy Foundation. With over 5,000 fresh items arriving every day Savers Thrift Stores offer a huge selection of quality used clothing, housewares, furniture, books, toys, and more!

The Savers brand should be recognizable to Saints fans already, as they present the widely popular Savers Family Sundays during every Sunday home game. Children are allowed to run the bases on the field after the game and then receive autographs from the entire team. Savers also sponsors the annual Zombie Baseball Crawl, held at Midway Stadium each summer. The sponsorship of the pig only strengthens the already rewarding relationship between the Saints and Savers.

"Savers Family of Super Thrift Stores is extremely excited to partner with the Saint Paul Saints and, most particularly, our new partnership with Mackleboar the Saints Mascot. The uniqueness of the St. Paul Saints organization and their commitment to the community is a strong reflection of what our business is built on: Giving back to the communities in which we operate."

During the previous 20 seasons the Saints have had a pig mascot and each has had a unique name. This year's pig, Mackleboar, was decided via social media vote for the first time in franchise history. Many of the names play on hot topics of the year, current events or local celebrities. Last season was the first time the Saints had two mascots, Kim Lardashian and Kris Hamphries. Past names have included Brat Favre (2010), Slumhog Millionaire (2009), Boarack Ohama (2008), Notorious P.I.G. - Piggy Smalls (2003) and Kevin Bacon (2001).

When the Saints moved to town in 1992, their sister team in Fort Myers was having great success with a live Golden Retriever mascot and the Saints wanted to capitalize on that success. Libby Veeck, the wife of Saints owner and President Mike Veeck, came across an interesting tidbit in a book she was reading and discovered St. Paul was known as "Pig's Eye" after Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parrant. Thus, the pig mascot was born.
