Wingnuts Close out Spring with Win

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts closed out their spring training schedule with a 9-6 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The Wingnuts won in their final turn at bat, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Stephen Yoo led off with a double to left-center field, took third on Abel Nieves' single to right, and scored the go-ahead run on Colt Loehrs sacrifice fly to center field. Nieves took second base on the same play, and scored one batter later on a David Amberson infield single that resulted in an error by Winnipeg third baseman Leonard Davis. Jake Kahaulelio finished the rally with a groundball single through the middle that plated Amberson.

Josh Dew threw a perfect top of the ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn the save.

Nick Walters earned the win in relief, throwing a scoreless top of the eighth.

Winnipeg built an early 3-0 lead through four innings. Davis cracked a two-out, RBI double off the top of the right-center field wall in the third to drive in the game's first run, while Amos Ramon and Jordan Guida produced run-scoring outs in the fourth.

The Wingnuts rallied for six runs in their half of the fifth, five of which came with two outs. Loehrs doubled home Nieves from third base to get Wichita on the board. After Loehrs went to third on Amberson's lineout to center field, Jared McDonald cut the lead to 3-2 on a drag bunt that rolled to second base. Ryan Khoury singled through the right side to sustain the rally, while Kahaulelio tied the game on a line drive single to left. John Rodriguez put the Wingnuts in front with a two-run double that carried to the left-center field fence. C.J. Ziegler knocked in the final run of the inning on a grondball single to left.

Winnipeg scored three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Mazzola hit a leadoff home run to center field to trim Wichita's lead to 6-4. Fehlandt Lentini and Nick Liles added RBI singles to knot the score at 6-6.

Ryan Hinson started for the Wingnuts and took a no-decision. Hinson pitched two innings of shutout ball, allowing no hits, two walks, and striking out three.

Pete Gehle also took a no-decision in his start for Winnipeg. Gehle allowed three earned runs on two hits in four and two-thirds. Gehle walked two and struck out two.

Nine different Wingnuts had at least one hit. Tyler White and Daniel Bennett each worked a scoreless inning of relief. The Wingnuts close out their exhibition schedule with a 6-2 record.

The 2013 season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins Thursday, May 16th against the Kansas City T-Bones at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Prior to the game, a ceremony celebrating the life of bench coach Brian Rose will take place. Jon Link will pitch for the Wingnuts and face Kansas City right-hander Shaun Garceau.

Beginning this season, fans can use cash at all points of sale in Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Debit and credit cards will still be accepted. Fans can resolve outstanding balances on cash cards from previous years until June 1st, 2013.
