Laredo Sets Opening Day Roster

LAREDO, TX - The Laredo Lemurs have finalized their opening day roster and have confirmed the starting rotation with Texas A&M product David Newmann earning the opening day start.

Newmann, 27 years old, will be making his first appearance in the American Association after spending his entire professional career in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, making it as high as Double-A Montgomery.

Newmann has not seen action since 2011 were he threw just 4.2 innings for Tampa Bay's Double-A affiliate, since then he has struggled with injuries. In his last full season with Montgomery, Newmann posted a 4.50 ERA in 23 starts.

The starting rotation will start off with lefty David Newmann, followed by right handed pitcher Mark Serrano, and lefty Greg Wilborn will go third. Right handed pitcher Leonard Gaimmanco will see action in the four spot and lefty Ryan Sasaki will wrap up the rotation in the five spot.

The Lemurs opening day roster consist of nine returning players including Jimmy Mojica, John Allen, Brian Peterson, Bradley Blanks, Mark Haynes, Edwin Walker, Philip Incaviglia, Leonard Giammanco, and Ryan Sasaki.

There are four players that played in Amarillo last year on the Lemurs this seaon, including pitcher Chad Povich, and infielders Harrison Kain, Jake Opitz, and Garret Rau.

The Lemurs also have two standouts from the Fargo Moorhead Redhawks. Both Jon Gaston and Marcos Rodriguez will see time in the outfield and may work in the DH spot throughout the season when needed.

And finally, there are two players that suited up in the Tampa Bay Rays organization including the center fielder Sawyer Carroll and the aforementioned pitcher David Newmann.
