Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, were held to just four hits at Sprenger Health Care Stadium on Thursday evening, as they were shutout in their home finale, dropping a 4-0 decision to the Windy City Thunderbolts.
The loss for the Crushers (43-50) was their fifth in their last six games, while the victory for the Thunderbolts (50-43) was their eighth in 12 games against the Crushers.
Windy City took advantage of the game's first extra base hit to plate the first run. Coco Johnson belted a one out triple to the wall in right-center field, and came home moments later to give Windy City a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Thunderbolts added to that advantage with another run in the top of the second. Kyle Wood and Ransom LaLonde reached on back-to-back one out walks, and Blair Beck belted a run scoring single to center to score Wood, giving the T-bolts a 2-0 lead.
Payton Lobdell (6-8) labored his way through the fifth inning, and while he nearly escaped without allowing any runs after allowing three straight batters to reach with one out, Larry Balkwill made him pay by smashing a two-run single to center with two outs to give the T-bolts a 4-0 lead.
As it turned out, that was all Clay Chapman (5-6) needed, as he turned in a complete game shutout, allowing just four singles, and struck out 11 batters along the way to grab the victory.
Lobdell took the loss for the Crushers after allowing four runs on seven hits and fanned four over 6.2 innings of work.
L.J. Kalawaia paced the Crushers offensively with a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 on the night.
The Crushers will begin a three game series with the Joliet Slammers in Joliet, Ill., on Friday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
