SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Stockton Ports' nine-game winning streak did not carry over into the second half of the California League season. The Boys of Banner Island were edged by the Inland Empire 66ers on Thursday night at San Manuel Stadium by a final of 3-2 to kick off the second half of the season and a four-game series.

Ports starter Dillon Overton (2-4) set the side down in order in the first but gave up a home run on the first pitch he threw in the second to Michael Snyder that gave the 66ers a 1-0 lead. With one out in the third, Overton surrendered another solo homer, this time to Ruben Sosa to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

The two solo homers were the only runs allowed by Overton, who suffered the loss after going five innings and allowing five hits while striking out a season-high seven.

Stockton struggled to figure out 66ers starter Jordan Kipper (3-5). Kipper did not end up in a jam until the fifth, his final inning of work. With runners at the corners and one out, Brett Vertigan tried to lay a bunt to the first base side but bunted the ball back to the mound, at which point Kipper threw home and got Franklin Barreto in a rundown between third and home, eventually to be tagged out.

Kipper picked up the win, going five scoreless innings while allowing five hits and striking out one.

The Ports scored their first run in the sixth off 66ers reliever Harrison Cooney, who gave up a two-out walk to Beau Taylor followed by an RBI double to Tyler Marincov to make it a 2-1 game.

Inland Empire countered with its third run in the bottom of the inning as they took advantage of the game's lone error. After a leadoff double and a walk put runners at first and second with nobody out, Snyder came up and hit a ground ball to third. Matt Chapman attempted to start an around-the-horn double-play, but his throw to second was low and skipped into right field, allowing Roberto Baldoquin to score and make it a 3-1 game. The run was unearned and the lone run allowed by Sam Roberts in his lone inning of relief.

Stockton's final run came in the seventh off Cooney. Barreto opened the inning with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored two batters later on a sac-fly by Vertigan to cut the deficit to 3-2. It was the final run of two allowed by Cooney in two innings of relief.

Geoff Broussard (SV, 3) took over in the eighth and went on to retire six of the seven batters he faced while striking out five and walking one to earn his third save of the season.

Sam Bragg closed the game strong for Stockton out of the bullpen. Bragg entered in the seventh and pitched two perfect innings while striking out the side in the eighth.

The Ports and 66ers play the second game of their four-game set on Friday at San Manuel Stadium. Kyle Finnegan (4-4, 5.29 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Inland Empire right-hander Garrett Nuss (0-3, 7.22 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
