Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - An overwhelming offensive performance in the early innings helped lead the Wilmington Blue Rocks to an 11-5 victory over the Frederick Keys on Friday night at Frawley Stadium. It marks Wilmington's third triumph in the last two days against the CL North first-half champs.
The Rocks plated two runs in the first and added six more in the second on their way to a wire-to-wire win.
Wil Myers came through with the big hit in the opening frame. With two outs and two men in scoring position, the designated hitter poked a grounder into left field, which gave the Rocks a 2-0 lead. Wilmington added to that in a big way when it sent 12 batters to the plate during a six-run, eight-hit second inning.
Rene Oriental had two hits in the frame, as did Rey Navarro. Christian Colon came through with the biggest hit, as his triple plated a pair. Nick Francis also added a run-scoring double in the inning.
The offensive onslaught gave Wilmington a hefty eight-run advantage. Frederick tried to fight its way back into the game with the long ball. Two fifth-inning dingers cut the Wilmington lead in half.
With the Rocks on top, 8-1, Ronnie Welty opened the inning with a double, and Jacob Julius followed it up with a two-run homer to right. Two outs later Pedro Florimon added a solo blast that carried over the right-field fence and made it an 8-4 game.
Wilmington put the contest away in the sixth though. Back-to-back-to-back singles by Colon, Eric Hosmer and Nick Francis gave Wilmington a five-run lead. And after Wil Myers was hit by a pitch, Salvador Perez put the final nail in Frederick's coffin with his two-run single to right-center field.
Frederick got the game's final run when Julius launched his second long ball of the night off the right-field foul pole.
All three of the dingers came off of reliever Harold Mozingo. But the VCU product, who tossed 3.1 frames in relief for starter Jairo Cuevas, got the victory. Mozingo (2-1) yielded four runs on four hits, but also fanned six.
Wilmington goes for the four-game sweep when it hosts Frederick again on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Left-hander Danny Duffy takes the hill for the Rocks against Keys southpaw Nate Nery (5-6, 3.79).
