Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

(Waldorf, MD August 2, 2015)--- Infielder Zach Wilson continued his torrid pace at the plate, falling a triple shy of the cycle as the Blue Crabs defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters by the final of 4-2.

Southern Maryland took the lead first for the first time in the series, pushing a run across in the bottom of the first. Zach Wilson doubled with two outs, followed by a walk by Jake Opitz. Jovan Rosa then stepped to the plate and lashed a double to left to score Wilson to make it 1-0. Sugar Land left the bases loaded in the top of the second, but tied the game in the top of the third on an RBI looping single off the bat of Travis Scott to score Wallace to tie the game at 1-1.

In the top of the fourth, former Blue Crab Renny Osuna led off with a single, followed by a single from Denny Almonte. The leadoff hitter Jeff Dominguez walked to load the bases. Another former Blue Crab Amadeo Zazueta walked to the dish and hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Osuna to make it 2-1 Skeeters.

The Blue Crabs managed to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. Zach Wilson led things off and ripped a homerun over the wall in left to tie the game at 2-2. Wilson wasn't finished yet though as he came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth with runners at second and third, and bounced a single through the left side of the infield to score Antone DeJesus allowing the Blue Crabs to reclaim the lead at 3-2. After the Skeeters once again left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Jovan Rosa led off the bottom of the frame and drove a homerun over the left field wall to give Southern Maryland the insurance run they needed to make it 4-2.

Erik Hamren came on for the save in the top of the ninth, and faced some rocky waters. Chris Wallace started things with a walk. Delwyn Young then ripped a single to right field to put two runners on. Hamren uncorked a wild pitch to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Erik buckled down though, and induced a ground out of Travis Scott, a strikeout of Allan Dykstra, and soft lineout by Patrick Palmerio to end the ballgame and give the Blue Crabs the 4-2 victory.

While Zach Wilson was the star of the game offensively, Fred Lewis and Jovan Rosa each had two hits apiece. RHP Daryl Thompson picked up his fourth win of the season, going six innings, allowing two runs, on eight hits, and striking out four. Sugar Land left 14 runners on base, including 10 left in scoring position.

The series finale will take place tomorrow at Regency Furniture Stadium. The first pitch is set for 7:05. RHP Sean Gallagher (1-8, 3.48) will take the hill for the Skeeters, while RHP Brian Baker (5-7, 4.74) will start for Southern Maryland.
