Wilmington Walks Ignite Keys Offense

WILMINGTON, DE - The Frederick Keys tied their season-high for runs and were assisted by 12 Wilmington Blue Rocks walks in a 12-9 victory on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium. Ending with 15 hits, the Keys had six different players tally multi-hit games and four record multi-RBI contests.
After stranding five men on base through the first two innings, the orange and black broke through in the third. Loading the bases with two out, Alejandro Juvier singled in two men, before Chris Clare came to bat. Although it was hit well to left off Anthony Bender, Clare's ball appeared to one-hop the fence. Still, after an umpire conference, the called remained the same. It was Clare's first homer of the year.
Frederick added one more run in the fourth, before Wilmington managed four runs in the home half of the inning to make it a two-run game. With one on, Brandon Downes cranked an RBI double to right off Jhon Peluffo. Xavier Fernandez then added an RBI two bagger, before a single by Chris Devito and an error by Jake Ring in right completed the scoring.
The visitors plated five of the next seven runs. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Keys in the fifth, while a wild pitch by Ofreidy Gomez scored Clare. Jomar Reyes then added a two-run single. Ryan McKenna made it an 11-6 affair in the sixth with a two-run double to left.
A two-bagger by Emmanuel Rivera in the seventh and a Meibrys Viloria single off Elvis Araujo helped Wilmington add one more in the seventh, before a wild pitch and a DeVito single gave the Blue Rocks two in the ninth. It would not be enough though, as Branden Kline closed things out.
Araujo (1-0) got the win for Frederick, tossing 2.1 innings of one-run baseball. The left-hander struck out five (all consecutively). Bender (1-1) took the loss for the Blue Rocks, issuing six walks to go with five runs in three innings.
The Keys and Blue Rocks conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. Left-hander Alex Wells (0-3, 4.50) starts for the Keys against Blue Rocks right-hander Gerson Garabito (1-2, 2.78).
