Willie Glen Claims Northern League Pitcher of the Week Award

GARY, Ind. - On the heels of his second career complete game shutout and riding a three-start winning streak, Gary SouthShore RailCats ace right-hander Willie Glen has been named the Northern League's Pitcher of the Week, it was announced today.
In two starts on the road - against the Northern League's two best teams, no less - Glen was a perfect 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, giving up just an unearned run in 7.0 innings Monday in Winnipeg before his shutout of Fargo-Moorhead Saturday night. The RailCats Opening Day starter and the team's all-time leader in a bevy of categories, Glen leads the 2010 RailCats in wins (4), strikeouts (37) and innings pitched (50.2). Glen's 37 strikeouts also rank fifth in the league, and he is third in the league in wins.
Glen got the RailCats seven-game road trip started the right way Monday night when he hopped off the bus and shut down the Winnipeg Goldeyes in a 2-1 'Cats win. Glen allowed just four singles and an unearned run in a seven inning start and had five strikeouts. On Saturday night, Glen guaranteed the RailCats a winning road trip by going the distance against the league-leading Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Glen gave up only five hits - again all singles - and walked one against seven strikeouts, notching just his second career shutout and fourth career complete game.
The 2007 Northern League Pitcher of the Year, Glen improved to 36-11 in four RailCats seasons with his two wins last week. A 10-year pro, Glen struck out the 900th batter of his career in the win Saturday night and is scheduled to make his 75th RailCats start Friday, July 2 when the RailCats open the Lake County Fielders new ballpark in Zion, Ill. Signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2001, Glen has pitched for five different Major League organizations including the last two with the Florida Marlins.
This is, remarkably, just the second Northern League Pitcher of the Week award for Glen, who was previously honored May 27, 2007. A two-time Northern League Pitcher of the Month (August 2006 and August 2007), Glen was a full-season Northern League All-Star in 2007 when he also earned the Northern League Championship Series Most Outstanding Player honor.
Glen is the second RailCats pitcher to earn the weekly award this year, joining Brandon Magee (June 9). Since Greg Tagert's arrival in 2005, a RailCats hurler has won the Pitcher of the Week award 17 times. Kansas City's Ray Sadler was named the league's Player of the Week Monday.
The RailCats (20-17) begin a three-game series with the Joliet JackHammers (17-18) tonight at 7 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard, with Zeb Engle (3-0, 2.21) making his first professional start opposite Joliet right-hander Bear Bay (2-2, 3.38 ERA).
