Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
Williamsport ended their two game skid by defeating the State College Spikes 4-1 on Friday night in the team's final meeting of the season. The victory was the Cutters 40th of the season.
The Cutters victory ends the 2009 SawBuck Series with a 6-6 tie. The all-time series between the two teams is also tied with both teams having won 24 times.
The Cutters took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning Friday as C Ryan Gugel walked and then reached second base on a wild pitch. CF Jiwan James reached by error with Gugel moving to third base. The Cutters went for a double steal during 3B Alan Schoenberger's at-bat as James took off for second and after the catcher made the throw down to second Gugel took off for home and was able to beat the second baseman's throw home with a nifty slide to score the Cutters first run of the game. 1B Darin Ruf plated James with an RBI single for the second run.
The Cutters padded their lead in the bottom of the 5th, scoring two runs with two-outs in the inning. RF Leandro Castro ripped a double and scored the third run on Ruf's double to right. Ruf came around to score after Spikes pitcher Tyler Cox (8-3, 3.93) uncorked two wild pitches.
Crosscutters starter Nick Hernandez (8-1, 2.70) dominated the Spikes lineup on the way to his team-leading 8th victory of the season. Hernandez allowed just two hits and no earned runs while striking out eight batters.
The Cutters were led offensively by 1B Darin Ruf who was 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.
The Crosscutters will host the Auburn Doubledays on Saturday at 7:05. The game can be heard on ESPN 1050AM, 104.1 FM or online at crosscutters.com.
