State College Spikes News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - Williamsport Crosscutters pitching was able to hold the State College Spikes to a season-low two hits, and took the final SawBuck Series matchup of the season, 4-1, at Historic Bowman Field on Friday.

Both State College (37-37) hits were leadoff doubles, as David Rubinstein and Justin Byler delivered two-base hits in the second and fourth innings, respectively. However, neither Spike made it past third base as Williamsport (40-34) pitching was able to retire 12 straight State College batters from the fourth to seventh innings.

The Spikes took advantage of a pair of errors in the eighth inning to get on the scoreboard with an RBI groundout by Brock Holt, but could not put together a ninth-inning rally.

Nick Hernandez (8-1) started and earned the win for Williamsport to pull into a tie for second in the league in victories with State College's Tyler Cox, Lowell's Jose Alvarez, and Brooklyn's Collin McHugh. Hernandez pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out eight. Chad Poe (1) picked up the save for Williamsport by finishing the gem with three innings.

State College starter Victor Black (1-2) took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk through three innings. Black struck out three in the effort.

With the win, the Crosscutters drew even in the 2009 SawBuck Series, 6-6, and tied the all-time series, 24-24. Williamsport defeated the Spikes after being outscored, 20-7, in the first two games of the three-game series.

Saturday, the Spikes start their final series of the season, a two-game set with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field, with a 7:05 p.m. game. State College will send right-hander Phillip Irwin (1-1) to the mound to face an as yet unannounced Mahoning Valley starter.

Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 3WZ at 95.3 FM starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Eastwood Field.

The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3-3WZ.
