Brockton Rox News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - Rox DH Clyde Williams hit a three-run home run for the second consecutive game to pace Brockton over the New Jersey Jackals, 5-2, on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
In the second inning, RF Keith Brachold and C Chris Grossman led off with singles to setup Williams' three-run bomb to center field. It was his fifth of the season and he has now driven in 17 runs on the season.
New Jersey (17-27) got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded walk drawn by LF Jeff Grose. The Rox (27-18) got the run back in the top of the third after 2B Scott Wearne started the frame off with a double. SS Dominic Ramos sacrificed him to third and then 1B Melvin Falu brought Wearne home with an RBI single.
It remained 4-1 Brockton until the top of the seventh as they added a two-out run. 3B Derek Kinzler and LF Mike Conroy both walked. Wearne followed up with the two-out run-scoring single to make it 5-1 Rox.
The Jackals inched to within three in the eighth on a fielder's choice RBI from 3B Mike Scanzano, but they were shutdown in the ninth by RHP Hunter Davis, who earned his sixth save in as many chances in a Brockton uniform.
RHP Mike Smith (6-3) earned the victory going seven full innings, allowing just one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Smith threw 119 pitches (68 strikes) and walked a season-high six batters during the outing.
LHP A.J. Wideman (3-5) suffered the defeat for New Jersey, going just four innings and giving up four runs and six hits with no walks and two strikeouts. New Jersey's bullpen combined for five innings with just one run and two hits.
Wearne was 3-for-5 for the Rox with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Grossman had a two-hit day, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. 2B Abraham Nunez was the only Jackal to have a two-hit day.
Game two of this three-game series is scheduled for Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. LHP Mike Wlodarczyk will take the mound for the Rox against New Jersey LHP Ryan Lobban.
