New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Clyde Williams launched a three-run home run in the second inning and Brockton Rox starter Mike Smith made sure it held up as the Rox defeated the New Jersey Jackals 5-2 on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Smith (6-3) yielded just one unearned run over seven innings. The veteran right-hander walked a season-high six batters, but allowed just four hits while striking out four.

Williams' fifth homer of the season was a liner to center field with no outs in the second after Keith Brachold and Chris Grossman began the frame with back-to-back singles. The Jackals plated a run in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded walk by left fielder Jeff Grose to make it 3-1, but New Jersey left the bases full and Brockton got the run back in the top of the third when second baseman Scott Wearne deposited a leadoff double down the left field line before scoring two batters later on an RBI single by first baseman Melvin Falu to make it 4-1.

Following the Falu base hit though, New Jersey pitchers retired 13 consecutive Brockton batters and the 4-1 score held until the top of the seventh when the Rox used a pair of two-out walks and a Wearne RBI single against reliever Edgar Estanga to extend their lead to 5-1. New Jersey countered with a run in the home half of the eighth on an RBI fielders' choice off the bat of third baseman Mike Scanzano, but former Jackal Hunter Davis held the Jackals scoreless in the ninth to notch his sixth save of the season.

Wideman (3-5), who was working on nine-days rest, left after just four innings despite retiring the Rox in order in the top of the fourth. He allowed four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Dan Griffin followed with two perfect innings out of the New Jersey bullpen while Mike Pontius and Romas Hicks each contributed a scoreless frame of relief for the Jackals.

Offensively for New Jersey, second baseman Abraham Nunez collected his team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the season in a 2-for-4 night at the plate while designated hitter Jacob Butler drew a trio of walks. For Brockton, Wearne went 3-for-5 while Grossman collected a pair of singles.

With just two games remaining in the first half of the Can-Am League season, the Jackals (17-27) and Rox (26-18) continue their three-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends left-hander Ryan Lobban (3-1, 5.20) to the mound against Brockton southpaw Mike Wlodarczyk (6-1, 3.71). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
