Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers News Release

Wilkes-Barre, PA- The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers announced the signing of a new back-up quarterback to the team's roster today. Former University of Pennsylvania quarterback/receiver Brandon Carson practiced with the team Wednesday night and is expected to back up Bryan Snyder this Friday against the Mohegan Wolves. Carson replaces Tyler Tomich, who had been playing through a shoulder injury for most of the season.

Head Coach Terry Karg believes Carson, who switched from quarterback to receiver mid-way through his college career, is up to the challenge. "I was impressed with Brandon when he tried out with us (last year)," said Karg. "He can play quarterback or receiver. With our injury situation the way it is, I like having another guy who can play multiple positions."

The Pioneers were also pleased with the play of lineman Patrick Garth, who was signed last week in time for the team's 52-35 victory over Rochester. Garth, at 6'3" and 285 pounds, has played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was most recently in camp with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes.

"Patrick provided us with energy on the defensive line and was able to pressure their (Rochester's) quarterback. He just needs to get more accustomed to the arena game," Karg added.

The Pioneers have the opportunity to move ahead of Mohegan for fourth place in the Northeast Division if they can defeat the Wolves in the next two games. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is currently three games behind Rochester for the division's second playoff spot.

The Pioneers will host Mohegan June 15 at the First Union Arena. Tickets can be purchased at the Arena box office or through all Ticketmaster outlets. Fans are reminded that the Pioneers Fanfest will be held from 5:30pm through 7:30pm in the Arena parking lot.
