Cape Breton Eagles News Release
The Screaming Eagles struck first but couldn't hold the lead in a 6-2 loss on Saturday in Moncton.
Cape Breton outshot Moncton 15-11 in the opening frame, and found the first goal courtesy of Sacha Roy at the 14:12 mark of the opening period. Roy drove to the side of the net and tapped the puck in following a three passing play with Declan Smith and Ryan Francis.
The Eagles held the lead as the halfway mark of regulation approached. Jakob Pelletier used his speed to cut through the middle of Cape Breton zone and was held by Kyle Havlena, earning a penalty shot. Pelletier would make no mistake and it was a tie game. In the final four minutes of the period Anderson MacDonald would connect on the power play, tipping a shot from Jeremy McKenna and put the Wildcats ahead.
MacDonald's goal was the beginning of a natural hat trick that would see its second and third goals come in the the third period. Just 2:20 into the final frame the Wildcats forward would jam home his own rebound in the crease to push the lead to 3-1. Later in the third period, with the teams playing four a side, he would tip a Mika Cyr shot to give Moncton a three goal edge.
Past the halfway mark of the third frame Wildcats captain Nicholas Welsh appeared to put the game away for his team with a shot from the left circle to make it a 5-1 game. It would spell the end of the night for Jessiman who would be relieved by Kevin Mandolese. But the Eagles would give themselves a chance when Egor Sokolov finished a cross-crease pass to give Cape Breton its second goal.
In the final five minutes the Eagles would have a two man advantage as Alexander Khovanov was given a high sticking penalty and Mandolese was on the bench for the extra attacker. Cape Breton wouldn't find another goal though and James Phelan would hit the empty net to give finish the scoring for the day.
Matthew Waite shone in the win for the Wildcats, stopping 34 of 36 shots. Jessiman allowed five goals on 30 shots in relief, and Mandoelese did not face any shots in his 7:05 of action.
The game marked the return of Screaming Eagles overage defenseman Ross MacDougall. It was his first game since November 18th when he suffered a lower body injury. MacDougall collected an assist, was a -1 and put three shots on goal.
