Gatineau, PQ -After falling behind 3 - 1, the Moncton Wildcats roared back to defeat the Gatineau Olympiques 4 - 3 before 2,806 at the Centre Robert Guertin on Thursday.
The teams were tied 1 - 1 after the first period and Gatineau took a 3 - 2 lead into the third period. Tim Spencer (5th) was the hero for the Wildcats, as he backhanded the game winner behind a sprawling goaltender David Trembley, who had just blocked a slap shot off the stick of Keith Yandle.
Along with setting up the game winner, Yandle scored two powerplay goals, his 22nd and 23rd markers of the season. Martins Karsums completed the Wildcats' scoring summary with his 28th goal, with assists going to line-mates JP Chabot and Brad Marchand. Jerome Samson added a pair of assists for the Wildcats, while Karsums, Chris Gaudet and Chris Morehouse each added one.
Claude Giroux (34th,PP,35th) scored a pair of goals in a losing effort for the Olympiques, with a single coming from Pierre-Luc Lessard (6th,PP).
Gatineau outshot Moncton 35 - 22, including 17 - 9 in the opening period and 9 - 4 in the middle stanza, while each team had nine shots apiece in the third period. Josh Tordjman made 32 saves to improve his record to 28 - 20, while David Trembley allowed four goals on 22 shots in 58:53 to see his record drop to 22 - 21. Moncton was 2 for 4 on the powerplay, while Gatineau went 2 for 7.
The game's three stars were #1 - Josh Tordjman, #2 - Claude Giroux and #3 - Keith Yandle.
Moncton remains in first place in the East Division and trails the Quebec Remparts by two points in the battle for first overall, with a record of 44 - 12 - 0 - 3 (91 pts). Gatineau remains in fourth place in the Western Division and seventh overall with a record of 34 - 20 - 4 - 2 (74 pts).
Moncton completes its three game in three-day road trip on Friday when they travel to Shawinigan to face the Cataractes.
Moncton recalled forwards Jason Lepage from the Quebec Midget AAA and Brad Smith from PEI Midget AAA due to injuries to defensemen Luc Bourdon and Maxime Belanger, along with forwards Matt Eagles, Philippe Dupuis and Stephane Goulet.
